Manager: Sterger wants Favre investigation completed soon
ASSOCIATED PRESS A spokesman for the former
Jets game hostess who allegedly received inappropriate phone messages and photos from Brett Favre said they are concerned the quarterback will be retired before the NFL concludes its investiga- tion. The NFL said Tuesday it is continuing to work on a “com- plex” investigation that needs a great deal of “due diligence.” Jenn Sterger’s manager Phil
Reese says his client wants the investigation finished during the season because Favre has said he will retire at the end of this year, at which point he may no longer be susceptible to punishment from the league. Favre allegedly sent Sterger the
messages and photos when both worked for the New York Jets in 2008. The quarterback has not commented on the allegations. The Sports Business Journal
first reported Reese’s concerns. l UNION: The NFL Players As-
sociation postponedfiling a collu- sion case against the sport’s fran- chise owners under an agreement
with the league completed Tues- day. The league and the players’
union announced jointly they’d agreed to postpone this week’s deadline for the union to file a collusion
case. The agreement en- ables the union to file the case later if it chooses, and the two sides vowed to continue negotiat- ing a potential extension of their collective bargaining agreement. A written statement issued
jointly by the league and union said: “The NFL and NFLPA have agreed to extend the deadline for the players to file a collusion claim. This agreement does not prevent the NFLPA from filing a collusion claim at a future date. We are continuing to work to- ward a newCBA that will be good for players, owners and fans.” The agreement between the
league and union represents a possible glimmer of hope that they are interested in making a concerted effort to solve their dif- ferences at the bargaining table. The union, according to sourc-
es, was making plans to file a collusion case early this week ac- cusing teams of conspiring im- properly to restrict players’ sala-
ries last offseason. —Mark Maske l COURTS: Pro football great
Lawrence Taylor says the rape indictment againsthimshould be dismissed because police did not have a warrant when they arrest- ed him. In a wide-ranging motion, Tay-
lor’s lawyer is seeking to at least suppress any statements Taylor made when he was arrested and to rule out any evidence taken from him. Taylor, 51, signedanautograph,
but he did not speak, on his way into the courthouse for a hearing before state Supreme Court Jus- tice William Kelly. Lawyers spent most of their time in a sidebar discussion with Kelly. Taylor’s next appearance will be Dec. 23. The former NFL MVP is ac-
cused of having sex with a 16- year-old prostitute in a suburban New York hotel room in May. He allegedly paid the Bronx runaway $300.He has pleaded not guilty to third-degree rape, patronizing a prostitute, sexual abuse and en- dangering a child. l 49ERS: Alex Smith is the starting quarterback yet again.

San Francisco’s Alex Smith will start for the first time since suffering a shoulder injury on Oct. 24. Coach Mike Singletary made

rebounds to lead Houston to a win over Detroit, ruining Tracy McGrady’s return to Houston. McGrady hit a three-pointer with
about eight minutes left to get the Pistons within one, but Houston scored the next seven points to stretch the lead to 85-77 with six minutes remaining. Scola made the last basket of that run and added six of Houston’s next eight points as the Rockets built a 93-79 lead. McGrady, who spent 5½ seasons

the fourth quarter against Sacramen- to, letting a 16-point lead dissolve before rallying over the final 11/2

kiddie ride,” Blake Griffin said. Thanks to Eric Gordon, the Clippers’
ride ended smoothly when he hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 47 sec- onds left to end a two-game skid.

Howard closer to season debut Josh Howard ismoving
closer tomaking his long- awaited season debut after spending the past fewmonths rehabilitating fromleft knee surgery. Howard has been cautious about his return— and had a slight setback a few weeks ago—but he said Tuesday that he likely would be back on the court at a home game in the next two weeks. “It’s about to be that time,”
Howard said at theWizards’ shootaround at the UCLA student activity center. “It’s probably going to be one of those home games coming up.” Howard still wouldn’t offer
a specific timetable. When asked if he would be back for either the Lakers on Dec. 14 or Miami on Dec. 18, Howard said, “I can honestly say I don’t know, but I hope that next week [is when it happens]. Charlotte [Dec. 20] or Chicago [Dec. 22]might be better for me.” Coach Flip Saunders joked
recently that Howard looks like he could play now, given how he has been participating in five-on-five drills, without any limitations, in practice the past few weeks. After practice onMonday,
Howard played in some two- on-two full-court drills with Hilton Armstrong, Hamady Ndiaye and Kevin Seraphin. Hemoved effortlessly up and down the court and had no problems cutting or sprinting up and down. Afterward, Howard, “I can run now.” “I think Josh is getting

closer and closer,” Saunders said. “The thing we have to look at with Josh, since we don’t have a lot of practice time, do we want to activate himat some point and know that the games are going to be his practice. Hemight play only 10 or 12minutes, but gradually use that as his rehabilitation.” Could it be next week?
“Could be,” Saunders said.
“I don’t know. I think we’ll evaluate after we get a couple of good workouts in. we’ll evaluate when he gets back.” Howard tore the ACL in his
left knee Feb. 22 in a win against Chicago and had surgery a few weeks later. He has been rehabbing with the Wizards’ training staff ever since, but now feels that it’s time to actually put on a uniform. “It’s probably going to start
up slow. It’s not going to be like I’mout there the whole game,” Howard said. “It’s going to be some soreness but nothing that’s limitingme. I’m able to fight through it, keep practicing. I’mbasically using my games as practice and workingmy way into it. Just how I’ve been feeling, continue to domy treatment. I hadmy down period. A real bad case of tendonitis, that come along with the injury. I had to treat that. Now I’mback on the right path. “It’s going to be some
soreness but nothing that’s limitingme. I’mable to fight through it, keep practicing.” Howard said he already
knows how he can best help theWizards as he eases his way back. “Mentally, I can go out
there and start it on the defensive end with us. I know I’ve always been able to lead by example with that. So I think that will be a big help with this team. Just keep working onmy offense until it comes. I already know that’s going to come. But I think defense is the key andme coming back helps that out a lot.” After being away from
basketball for nearly eight months, Howard said, “I’m going to be excited. It’s a good feeling to know that I’m actually going to be able to come back and play, be almost 100 percent healthy. Just go out there and have fun. It’s been a long time coming.” —Michael Lee
