and stickmy chin out again.” No one in the NFL expects
herewasn’tmuch strut in the steps of the New York Jets as they threw their
football gear into bags, quietly dressed in the visitor’s locker room at Gillette Stadium and made their way to team buses late Monday night to begin the trip home from Foxborough, Mass. If the Jetswere theNFL’s “it”
team entering the season— de- clared the Super Bowl champi- ons-to-be by their coach and seemingly savoring their time in the spotlight as the subject of the HBO reality series “Hard Knocks” — they no longer looked or felt that way after they were crushed by the New England Patriots, 45-3. “The last [butt] whipping I
had like this, I was with anoth- er organization,” linebacker Calvin Pace said. “It’s hum- bling. But you have tomove on. I’m pretty sure everyone here will use this to examine them- selves and do what it takes for us to get better.” Coach Rex Ryan, responsible
for generating much of the team’s advance billing, called the experience “humiliating for one night.” But then he revert- ed to defiant form. “I can promise you one
thing: I’ll be ready to play them,” he said. “I’ll play them right now if they’ll go out and do it again. You know . . . that’s the only way I know how to respond. I’ll sit back out there

the Jets to go away meekly, even after Monday’s lopsided loss. They nowtrail the Patriots by a game in the AFC East, and they no longer are the front- runner for the top seed in the AFC playoffs. But they’re still well positioned to reach the playoffs with a record of 9-3, and they’re not ready to com- pletely abandon the bravado that they brought into the sea- son. “This is a good lesson for us
that you have to play well in these big games,” said quarter- backMark Sanchez. “We’ll have plenty more that will be big from here on out, and we’re going to have to fight and get some help from the outside to win the division. So we’ll see.” The Jets reached the AFC
title game last season with a rookie head coach in Ryan and a rookie quarterback in San- chez, even after Ryan declared the team’s playoff chances ex- tinguished at one point late in the regular season. The Jets led the league in total defense and rushing offense, and they used those strengths to overcome Sanchez’smistakes. When the Jets made a series
of high-profile offseason addi- tions and signed standout cor- nerbackDarrelleRevis to a new contract to end his lengthy holdout, Ryan’s preseason boasts about his team seemed plausible. At one point, he signed the outside of an ESPN training camp tour bus with a
“Soon to be champs” slogan. The Jets beat the Patriots by
two touchdowns in the second week of the season at New Meadowlands Stadium. But that is their lone victory this season over a team that cur- rently has a winning record. “We’ve got to go back to the
drawing board,” Pace said late Monday night. “As bad as this is, we still have a mission. It shows us we’re not invincible. . . . You would think in a game like this, with all the stakes on the line, wewould putmore out there. We just have to get back to playing well. You can’t be up one game, down one game.” The Patriots were unerring
and unrelentingMonday.Quar- terback Tom Brady, who has won three Super Bowls, threw four touchdown passes and no interceptions. He never left the game, and Coach Bill Belichick kept his offense on the field for a fourth-and-one conversion in the final quarter en route to the Patriots’ last touchdown. Ryan said he didn’t think
Belichick and the Patriots were “necessarily trying to rub it in.” But he added: “Imean, let’s face it: We kicked their butt at our place. So, you know, they are trying to come back. So trust me: We will remember this. There is no question about that.” Said Pace: “They don’t like
us. We don’t like them. That’s what rivalries are about. What was done was done. Hopefully if we’re in that situation, we do the same thing and run it up on
