On Thanksgiving Day,November 25, 2010, the vibrant family man and trusted friend, Peter Howes,went into cardiac arrest near the 5 ½mile mark of the 6.2 mile Turkey Trot Race in Virginia Beach. Aveteran of the United States Army Gene travelled extensively and had an uncommon ability to befriend awide spectrum of people and delighted in sharing with them his views on religion, politics and sports, in that order.

J. Eugene Quinn, 70, of Falls Church, VA died suddenly Friday,December 3, 2010 at the George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC.


He was the loving husband of Marguerite Slocum Quinn to whom he was married 23 years. In addition to his wife he is survived by his daughter Tara and her husband Andrew Reilly of Middle- town, RI, his grandchildren Andrew and Fiona and his brothers Paul of McLean, VA,Thomas of Washington, DC, and Francis of New York City and their families.


Joseph Eugene Quinn was born in Pawtucket, RI on March 1, 1940, the thirdoffour sons of the late Joseph L. and Mary E. (Flynn) Quinn. Although Mr. Quinn lived in the Washington for area for three decades he considered Rhode Island his home and enjoyed spending summers there.


Since the early 1980s he held aseries of increas- ingly important positions with the federal govern- ment, initially with the Reagan Administration. At the time of his death he was an international trade specialist and project officer for Global Trade


Active in local and national Republican politics he worked for the 1984 reelection of Ronald Reagan and delighted in telling friends that worked in the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington.


He is also survived by his step-children John Trevor, Phyllis Higgerson, Evelyn Holm, Sophia Girard, and Irene Brooke, their spouses and 13 step- grandchildren. They,along with seven nieces and nephews, several cousins and countless friends join in mourning his untimely passing.


Along with his wife Margy,Gene was afounding member of the Anacostia Gracious Arts Program, an urban after school arts program for underpriv- ileged youth in Washington. Mr.Quinn was a member of the Spouting Rock Beach Association in Newport, RI, the Clambake Club of Newport, the Providence College Alumni Association, and the American Ireland Fund.


AMass of Christian Burial in celebration of Gene’s life will be held at St. Mary’sChurch, Spring Street, Newport, RI on Saturday,December 11, 2010 at 10 a.m. Awake will be held at the family home, 459 Bellevue Avenue, Newport on Friday, December 10 between 6and 8p.m.

Died November 22, 2010, at Morningside Assisted Living Care in Williamsburg,VA. Ruby was born June 12, 1916 in Ansted, West Virginia, the youngest of nine chil- dren. She moved to Washington, DC to support the troops during World WarIIand worked with the USO where she met her future husband, Charles. She enjoyed dancing, traveling, being with friends,and reading.Atage 82 she traveled to Thailand and rode an elephant. With her husband Charles,Ruby owned and managed awallpaper store.Later she worked as atravel agent for AAA and then as abookkeeper for the law firm of Benson, Stien and Braunstein of Washington, DC. Ruby had the respect and admiration of all the attorneys with whom she worked -and her word at the firm was LAW. She ruled with an iron hand –but was always fair,and the best interests of the firm were always uppermost in her mind. She carried that same loyalty to her friends. Ruby was amember of St. Peter’sCatholic Church on Capitol Hill. Ruby is survived by her niece Norma Lee Waybright of Fayetteville,NCand nephew Ronald E. Dixon of Williamsburg,VA. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles and siblings,Minona, Hazel Parrish, Beulah Gladys Patterson, Harry Gordon, Freddie Delbert, Blanch Cline,Muriel West, and Anna Lee Zeigler. CARL W. ULRICH


Carl William Ulrich, 66, of Richmond, Virginia, passed away Saturday,December 4, 2010, at the Medical College of Virginia.


He was born September 30, 1944, in Mount Vernon, New York, to Carl A. and Alice B. Ulrich, and attended schools in Bethesda and Annapolis, Maryland. His step-parents, Dorothy M. Ulrich and Charles Wesley Winter,each played an influential role in his early life. He attended Rice University in Houston, Texas, on an NROTC scholarship and served in Vietnam as an officer of the U.S. Marine Corps. He received alaw degree from Georgetown University and entered private practice in Washing- ton, DC, whereheworked in energy law for almost three decades, interrupted by atwo-year stint as in- house counsel for Texas Eastern in Houston, Texas. In addition to being amember of the D.C., Texas


Throughout his life, Carl felt astrong spiritual calling. He entered Wesley Theological Seminary in 1999 to preparefor asecond career as aMethodist minister.Heleft the practice of law in 2000, graduated from Wesley in 2002, and was ordained an elder of the United Methodist Church in 2005. He served as minister of Accotink UMC in Fort Belvoir,Silverbrook UMC in Lorton, Central UMC in Mathews, and Belmont UMC in Richmond, all in the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. He was very active in the conference, and served on the boards of the Society of Wesleyan Studies and the Virginia United Methodist Foundation. He greatly valued the many wonderful friends he made in both his legal and religious careers.


Carl is survived by his wife, Christine R. Ulrich of Richmond, VA;their two daughters, Susanna V. and Catherine L. Ulrich; agrandson, Cassius Corey; two sons-in-law,David Corey and Pawel Nazarewicz; and two stepsisters, Juliette “Archie” Cooper and Helga Reaves. He was preceded in death by his father,Carl A. Ulrich, and his mother,Alice B. Hamilton.


Amemorial service will be held at Belmont United Methodist Church in Richmond, Virginia, 1p.m. on Saturday,December 11. Therewill be areception at the church directly after the service. While hosting aLithuanian community function she met Pranas Tupikas, amember of the Lithuanian Parliament and signatory of the March 1990 Lithuanian Re-Declaration of Independence. They weremarried in 1996. They werethen frequent visitors to Lithuania.

Died peacefully on Friday,December 3, 2010 at her home in Falls Church, Virginia. Danute Irena Staknis was born in Palanga, Lithuania in 1924, she completed high school and was 17 years old when she and her family had to emigrate from Soviet occupied Lithuania to the United States. In the United States she enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served until the end of WW II. She wanted to continue her studies of French language and literature, and did so at the University of Neuchatel, Switzerland and at the Sorbonne in Paris, France.


She started her career with the United Nations as it was being formed. Later she entered the U.S. Foreign Service and was assigned to the American Consulate in Melbourne, Australia. She worked as amember of the Foreign Service Staff in Geneva, Switzerland, whereshe met her futurehusband, Joseph Luther Harmon, aForeign Service Attache. They served together in Guatemala for 2years. They settled in Falls Church, Virginia and had two daughters. Danute continued her language studies


Danute will be remembered by the passion, kind- ness, dignity and elegance with which she lived her life and brought to all of us who shared her life.


Danute is survived by her husband Pranas Tupikas, daughters Mirga Harmon of Arlington, Virginia and Laima Harmon and her husband Geoffrey,of Burlington, Vermont, brother Eddie Staknis of New York, brother Vincent Staknis of New Jersey, sister Ellenor Pugh of NY,brother Al Staknis of California, brother Frank Staknis of New Jersey, brother John Staknis of Florida, and 27 nieces and nephews. Danute is predeceased by her first husband Joseph Harmon, sister Regina Calder of Pennsylvania, brother Clem Staknis of New Jersey, sister Isabel Horton of New Jersey,sister Natalie Kiausas of New Jersey,sister Valeria Staknis of Lithuania, and sister Margaret Samat of California.


Visitation will take place on Thursday,December 9 at Murphy Funeral Homes in Falls Church, VA from 2p.m to 4p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, PO Box 96011, Washington D.C 20090-6011, 1-800-272- 3900, www.alz.org.
