Keith Powell moved to Florida with the idea of pursuing a career


in marine biology, but soon learned that the textures of the coral reefs and underwater caverns interested him more than the sea life. A chance meeting with an executive from Ralph Lauren resulted in Powell be- ing hired to set up an emerging chain of boutiques on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach. In 1988, Powell founded VIU Design, providing window display and store design for illustrious clients, including Calvin Klein, Gucci, Gianni Versace and Tiffany & Co. After creating a successful business, Powell wanted a new challenge. His opportunity came when a friend of his wanted to redesign his Wellington, Florida, home. Pow- ell’s reputation has continued to flourish and today A. Keith Powell Interior, located in Miami, has clients from California to Jamaica. “The ultimate man cave,” according to Powell, the inspiration for


this sitting room came from a culmination of Powell’s personal ex- periences and his long-standing love of all things textural and mod- ern, “but mostly from my latest obsession with the 1970s glamorous New York City style,” he adds. The flooring he selected from Walker Zanger is a metallic porcelain tile punched up with an inlay of pol- ished stainless steel. A new wallpaper pattern from Arte gives the ap- pearance of snakeskin and adds shimmer to the room. “It’s a new pro- cess of weaving actual metal into the paper and it gives this metallic sheen like none other!” he exclaims. “I like to think that Halston or Karl Lagerfeld would feel right at home,” quips Powell.
