The design world is no stranger to sustainability. In fact,

interior designers, with support from organizations like the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), were early adopters of green practices and interest continues to grow. Earth-conscious lifestyles are top of mind for many, and those in the built environment carry an even greater respon- sibility than most. Building construction alone consumes 60 percent of raw materials in the U.S. and buildings use 70 percent of the country’s electricity annually. In response, organizations and companies in the design

industry have gathered research, released best practices and products and created learning tools around sustainable prac- tices. The knowledge is there, but in too many places. What has been missing in the marketplace is a comprehensive, centralized and easily accessible tool for green residential remodeling that cuts through the maze of information. The answer is REGREEN. The REGREEN program

began as a partnership between ASID and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to create the nation’s first sus- tainable residential remodeling guidelines. Since its release in 2008, the free guidelines have been downloaded more than 100,000 times by homeowners, contractors and design professionals. The momentous popularity of the guidelines prompted ASID and USGBC to expand the program to meet industry demand. What was once a hard-copy set of guidelines with case

studies has transformed into a robust program that was un- veiled at USGBC’s annual Greenbuild International Con- ference & Expo in Phoenix, Arizona, in November 2009. REGREEN now consists of: • Interactive Web site (www.regreenprogram.org) • Case studies • Room-by-room remodel techniques • Green product checklist

needed to tackle green residential remodels of any size. REGREEN addresses the major elements that apply to all green renovation projects, including the site of the home, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, material and re- sources, and indoor environmental quality. The gamut of information is accessible to everyone, from the professional designer to the curious consumer. For those interested in the formal education component,

the educational offerings can culminate in a REGREEN certificate. To qualify, individuals must complete 25 hours of coursework in designated categories (see www.regreen- program.org for more information). Now individuals can be recognized for their REGREEN education and distinguish themselves in the marketplace. The REGREEN certificate includes its own mark and certificate holders are added to a directory on both the ASID and USGBC Green Home Guide Web sites. Are you a design professional interested in REGREEN

and don’t know where to start? Visit the Education section of the Web site for more information on our REGREEEN certificate program. Sustainable design is here to stay and REGREEN has

made it within reach. REGREEN has synthesized a wealth of information but its job is not done yet. New techniques, ideas and research continue to advance the field and the design world will be the first to hear of the progress. RE- GREEN will make sure of that.
