Showroom Top Picks DESIGN ATELIER By Kate Yule Perched on the 18th floor of the world’s largest design

center, Chicago’s Merchandise Mart, Barbara Pearl- man’s first showroom, Design Atelier - Modern, show- cases some of the best classic, understated, minimalist modern fare available. Pearlman opened the doors of this trade-only showroom in 1981 while dividing her time among clients across the country. In 2001, she decided to branch out and opened her

second showroom 12 stories below on the sixth floor dedicated to traditional furnishings. “We are fixed on serious antiques that have been tweaked a bit then re- produced to perfection next to an occasionally whimsi- cal traditional piece,” she remarks of the Design Atelier - Traditional showroom. What’s the secret to her more than 30 years of success? “Having spectacular product is only part of my showrooms’ equation for success,” she reveals. “Our vendors must pass the acid test: Are they reliable, honorable and financially stable? Are they fair and will they support the design community to the fullest? Quality can never be an issue.” This combined with the excellence she expects, and receives, from her staff have positioned the Design Atelier showrooms as permanent fixtures at The Merchandise Mart. Pearlman recently shared her top showroom picks

with DTM. Pearlman’s Top Picks Artistic Frame 2932 Chair: “One of my all-time

favorites,” claims Pearlman, “I adore Artistic Frame’s multiple personality dining chair that boasts lots of at- titude — leggy with just the wisp of a skirt.” Available as a side or arm chair, with optional tufted skirt and ro- sette detail, the 2932 Chair measures 21.75”w x 24.5”d x 38.5”h. Pearlman believes this is a “smart chair that works just as well without a skirt due to its perfect, clas- sic proportions.” Shelley Handman of Handman Associates in Chicago

states, “I like using this chair for its recall of the glam- our of the ‘40s,” and can easily imagine Dorothy Draper or Jean Harlow slinking into it at her make-up table. He affirms, “Be it used in a dining room or at a deluxe bath- room vanity, it’s chic, elegant and sexy.”
