Design Trade Superstar

Nina Petronzio

For Nina Petronzio who was born in Nova Scotia to owners of a C

art foundry, a flair for all things artistic is definitely in the blood. At age 13, Petronzio was cast in the lead female role in the film “Vincent et moi,” which was shot in Holland, France and Montreal. She attri- butes her sense of fashion and style and her love of architecture to her Eurpoean travels during the film’s release on the film festival circuit, particularly her travels to Italy — her ancestral country. After migrating to Los Angeles in her early 20s, Petronzio began working at a Beverly Hills design firm specializing in contemporary design. In 2000, she formed her own boutique design firm focusing on traditional designs with worldly influences. Petronzio opened the flag- ship showroom for her own line, Plush Home, on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles with husband Steven Ho, martial artist, stunt coordinator and stuntman. Known for her transitional interiors and discerning clientele, Petronzio has designed for celebrities, such as Mark Wahlberg and Leonardo DiCaprio, as well as provided pieces for television and movie sets, including “Spider-Man 2,” “Nip/Tuck” and “Heroes.” Petronzio was awarded the title of Design Trade Superstar as the

top vote getter in our most recent “Give Us Your Best Shot” com- petition on facebook.com/designtrade for the residential living room pictured here. The clients on this project asked her to transform an ex- isting space into a serene, formal living room suitable for large gath- erings. Their second request was that she incorporate their favorite color, brick red. The main problem with the room’s original design, according to Petronzio, was that it lacked a focal point. She remedied this by painting the mantel white, making it the focal point, and ar- ranging the furniture around it. She chose a putty color for the wall to coordinate with the neutral textiles and contrast the punches of red. Petronzio’s challenge was to ensure the space had a calm, soothing feel while incorporating the clients’ favorite “excitable” color. The seating group features Plush Home’s Chelsea Sofa and Gatsby

Chairs surrounding two custom acrylic cocktail tables, also by Plush Home, which allow for maximum viewing of the Tufenkian area rug. Brick-red drapes dramatically frame the windows and the custom- made dark brown wood poles and rings complete the look. A serene, yet vibrant, impressionistic oil painting above the mantel, along with black and white photography and strategically placed accessories tie the room together.
