designers and allow them to choose products from more than 90 trade showrooms along with free reign to create a design that reflects their own taste? ine how much planning and work goes into organizing such an event. If you’re an interior designer, you may be wondering how designers are selected to participate in a show house. After launching their inau- gural DesignHouse in January, Ashlee Harrison, director of marketing for the DCOTA in Dania Beach, Florida, shared some of the behind- the-scenes details on the making of a design show house with DTM. The first decision the planning team had to make was location, lo-

cation, location. The decision to build the house within the DCOTA building stemmed from management’s desire to “bring the design community back to the center, to see what we have to offer, to be stimulated to redesign or get ideas or see product in a lifestyle setting,” states Harrison. Another decision that needed to be addressed early on was who the beneficiary would be. Considering DCOTA’s dedication to support- ing the advancement of the arts, a museum was the perfect choice. The design center also wanted to bring together the three counties that comprise South Florida, so they chose a museum from each county to be the beneficiaries of the event: Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale and Vizcaya Museum & Gardens in Miami. Harrison revealed that the entire process from concept to comple-

tion took approximately five months. Selecting the designers began with showrooms, editors, award recipients and other industry leaders nominating designers. More than 100 nominated designers were sent a floor plan of the DesignHouse and an invitation to submit their port-
