Scoring chances against a pitcher of Josh Johnson’s caliber seldom materialize, and so letting even one of them pass stings. The Washington Nationals defied the odds Saturday night, which made their 2-0 loss to Johnson and the Florida Marlins so dispiriting. They clogged the bases all night. The scoreboard still stayed blank. Before 23,005 at Sun Life Stadi- um, the Nationals could not gath- er momentum from the shutout Stephen Strasburg helped create, instead squandering Liván Her- nández’s sterling start and a fist- ful of offensive opportunities. The Nationals stranded 10 run- ners — six by Adam Dunn alone — and saw another thrown out at home plate. Johnson entered with a ridicu- lous 0.80 ERA in his last 11 starts, but the Nationals greeted him with consecutive hits and smacked seven total, more than he had allowed in one game since June 3. Hernández surrendered only four hits and one earned run — which came after Ian Desmond could not squeeze a soft line drive — in six innings. But the Nation- als could neither support Her- nández nor exploit Johnson’s rare vulnerability. The most painful wasted chance was the last one. The Na- tionals could not break through against Johnson, but all of their hits at least forced him from the game after the sixth, at which point he’d thrown 109 pitches. Against José Veras, the Nation- als promptly put two men on with two outs in the seventh for Ryan Zimmerman. Veras started him with three balls, and Zim- merman made a rare decision. He had put one ball in play on a 3-0 count in his entire career, but with the Nationals down two and two on, Zimmerman unleashed a Home Run Derby hack and skied reliever Veras’s fastball deep to left field. The ball seemed des- tined for the seats above the tall outfield fence, but as it hung in the starless sky, the wind whip- ping from right to left pushed the ball toward the foul pole. It fell to the left side — foul.

Zimmerman grimaced and

walked back to the plate with a 3-1 count and a chance. Veras froze him with a fastball for strike two and a daring, low curve for

offered a torrent of updates on the host of Nationals starters currently pitching in the minor leagues. He cautioned that the status of all the rehabbing starters — Ross Detwiler, Scott Olsen, Jason Marquis, Jordan Zimmermann and Chien-Ming Wang — is murky. “There’s absolutely no certainty,” he said.

Rizzo estimated that J PAT CARTER/ASSOCIATED PRESS

strike three. Veras screamed and danced off the mound, and Zim- merman flipped his bat and trudged toward the dugout. The final missed opportunity to score ended a sour night. Nyjer Morgan grounded a single through the middle, and Roger Bernadina flared one to right. Since May 13, the league had been hitting .193 off of Johnson. The Nationals, two hitters in, were batting 1.000. Johnson had allowed zero or one runs in 10 of his last 11 starts, and the Nationals had three outs with which to push around their fastest base runner with their best hitters upcoming. It a gift, a dream start. And the Nationals squandered it.

Zimmerman smoked a liner to

center, at Cody Ross and deep enough to send Morgan to third base. Dunn could have driven home Morgan with just a sacri- fice fly. Instead, after he whistled a foul ball just to the right of first base, Dunn flailed at a 91-mph slider for strike three. Josh Wil- lingham roped a liner in the wrong direction, right at Dan Ug- gla. Johnson had escaped. The Nationals managed an- other brief rally in the third when Bernadina and Zimmerman sin- gled. Dunn again had a chance, and again Johnson blew a pitch past him. Dunn tossed the bat and grabbed the barrel with his right hand. In the fourth, the Nationals got a runner to within a few feet of the plate. Adam Kennedy singled

to right with two outs and then stole second. He can do that — de- spite being one of the slowest runners on the team, Kennedy is one of two National League play- ers to steal 10 bases without be- ing caught this year. With Kennedy in scoring posi- tion, Desmond chopped to sec- ond base, a routine out until Ug- gla could not handle it. When Ug- gla bobbled the ball and tried to recover, third base coach Pat Lis- tach windmilled Kennedy around. As Kennedy passed third, Listach pointed at the base, an in- struction to stop. Kennedy pre- sumably Listach’s second sign, because he wheeled home. Uggla calmly threw home With Hernán- dez due up, the play at home may not have mattered much. Then again, Hernández led off the fifth with a single, the 200th hit of his career, the most of any active pitcher. He made it to second when Bernadina reached on a bungled play by Gaby Sanchez. Zimmer- man flied to right, and up came Dunn once again. His chance for redemption fizzled when he could not check his swing on a high-and-tight fastball. Dunn skidded his bat along the dirt be- fore walking out to first base to play defense. Before the game, a clump of

bees invaded a section of Sun Life Stadium behind the Nationals bullpen, forcing staffers to cor- don off the seats with caution tape.

Detwiler, Olsen and Marquis will be the first pitchers to come back to Washington. Here are updates on Nationals pitchers trying to get back to the majors:  Detwiler: In Class AA Harrisburg, Detwiler is still trying to find comfort with his surgically repaired hip. He allowed one earned run in five innings Friday, hitting 93 mph with his fastball; he’s touched 94 in past starts. His mission, seven starts into his rehab, is to “get his game back in line to kind of knock off some rust,” Rizzo said. “He’s pitching well,” Rizzo added. “His velocity is creeping up there. We’re trying to get him to the point where he’s throwing more consistent quality strikes. That’ll give us an indication that he’s using his lower body in his delivery. That’s the important thing to look for.”  Olsen:He was scheduled to make his third rehab start Saturday night at Class A Hagerstown and throw four innings and/or 65 pitches. While Olsen is coming along, there is no set timetable for his return to the major leagues. “He’s still rehabbing, so we’ll see where that takes him,” Rizzo said. “He should not be too far away.”  Marquis: Some significant progress here — on Sunday for the team’s Rookie-level Gulf Coast League affiliate, he’ll make his first rehab start since the surgery he underwent in May to remove bone chips from his right elbow. He is down to pitch three innings.  Zimmermann: He’ll continue his sterling rehab in

the coming days in Class A Potomac by throwing 80 pitches. Zimmermann is targeted to return during the first half of August, but his rapid progress may not fully determine his 2010 debut date. “He’s ahead of schedule, but

we’re going to keep him on my schedule. He’s too important of a cog to rush. I’m a big believer in giving that full calendar year,” Rizzo said. Once Zimmermann comes to Washington, he’ll still have restrictions in terms of pitch counts and innings limits.  Lannan: Expect him back in Washington by the end of the season. On Saturday night, Lannan was set to make his fifth start since the Nationals demoted him to Class AA Harrisburg. Lannan was 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA in his first four starts. While Rizzo still sees work to be done, he gave Lannan an emphatic vote of confidence. “John is going to be a big league pitcher,” Rizzo said. “John’s a major league pitcher. He’s down there to get himself straightened out. I’ve got a lot of confidence in him that’s he’s going to be a good, productive major league starter for a long time.”

Infield time scarce Nationals Manager Jim

Riggleman plans to give Ian Desmond the day off Sunday, keeping with his design for a truer three-man rotation in the middle infield between Desmond, Cristian Guzmán and Adam Kennedy. Riggleman said he’ll decide who plays “on a day-to-day basis” and that pitching matchups will determine some of the decisions. Ultimately, though, he hopes to give Desmond 500 total at-bats in his rookie season while also getting Guzmán and Kennedy regular playing time and not neglecting Alberto González. “It’s impossible to keep all four of them active,” Riggleman said. “It’s hard to keep three of them active. But I felt like we played better baseball when we did that.”
