Barry H. Young, 69, who re- tired in 1998 as the senior vice president and director of leasing for Mills Corp., a developer of outlet malls, died of respiratory failure July 10 at Holy Cross Hos- pital in Silver Spring. He lived in Columbia. From 1971 to 1980, Mr. Young owned and operated Barry’s Res- taurant in Columbia, which spe- cialized in thick-crust pizza. After closing the business, he worked for a number of development firms until 1986, when he joined Mills.
At the time of his retirement, he was responsible for leasing contracts at two of the company’s largest outlet malls, Sawgrass Mills in Sunrise, Fla., and Gurnee Mills outside Chicago. Barry H. Young was a native
Washingtonian and a 1958 gradu- ate of Woodrow Wilson High
School. He graduated from George Washington University in 1962 and received a master’s de- gree in restaurant and hotel man- agement from Michigan State University in 1964. In college, Mr. Young earned
extra money working at his fa- ther’s restaurant, the Roumanian Inn and Romany Room, which was later renamed Paul Young’s Restaurant. The Romany Room, a night- club above the restaurant, hosted comedians and musical acts in- cluding Sid Caesar, Dean Martin and Nat King Cole’s trio. “It was a small room, only seat- ed 150 people,” Mr. Young’s father, Paul, told The Washington Post in 1986. “A table the size of a phone book would seat four for dinner. If your thigh itched, you’d be scratching somebody else’s leg.” In 1961, the Kennedy family hosted a private inaugural cel- ebration at the Roumanian, rent- ing out the entire restaurant for

Charles B. Gittings Jr., 57, who for nearly nine years ran a Web site dedicated to stopping pris- oner abuse in the war on terror- ism, died July 14 at his home in Fort Bragg, Calif. He had cancer. Although he was not a lawyer,
Mr. Gittings had a lifelong inter- est in military tactics and law that led him to become an in- valuable resource to some of the nation’s greatest experts in the field. Not long after the Sept. 11,

Jane V. Buckle, 77, who became
a lawyer in her 40s and practiced in Washington, died June 17 at Seasons Hospice in Randall- stown, Md. She had leukemia. Mrs. Buckle, a District resi- dent, worked for the State De- partment from 1954 to 1957, in- cluding an assignment in Ge- neva. She lived in Portugal from 1962 to 1966 when her husband, a Foreign Service officer, was as- signed there. Mrs. Buckle graduated from American University in 1971 and received a law degree from Catholic University in 1975. She worked for the Edidin and LaPla- ca law firm from 1976 to 1991 and later had a solo practice. Mary Jane Vinson was born in
Homestead, Fla. She was a mem- ber of the Society of Mayflower Descendants and DACOR, an or- ganization for retired Foreign Service officers. She volunteered with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Her husband of 12 years, John
F. Buckle, died in 1969. A son, John F. Buckle Jr., died in 2003. Survivors include a son, Dr.
Guy J. Buckle of Boston; two stepdaughters, Eve Dorf of Fair Oaks, Calif., and Michelle Brum- baugh of The Woodlands, Tex.; a brother; and four grandchil- dren.

Paul A. Sweeney Jr., 69, a stockbroker for Merrill Lynch, died of cancer June 19 at his home in Chevy Chase. Mr. Sweeney joined Merrill
Lynch as a broker in the early 1970s and developed a reputa- tion as one the firm’s top experts on options trading. Paul Anthony Sweeney Jr., a
native Washingtonian, graduat- ed from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in 1959. He was a graduate of American University, where he also received a master’s degree in business. As a teen, he was among the early players of the annual Thanksgiving Day “Turkey Bowl” football game. He was a member of the Catho- lic Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Washington. Phyllis C. Smink, 88, who co- owned and operated two Citgo gas stations in the Rockville area from the late 1960s to the 1980s, died July 5 at her home in Beth- esda. She had congestive heart failure. Mrs. Smink owned the stations with her husband and, after his death in 1974, with two of their sons. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revo- lution, the Woman’s Club of Che- vy Chase and Bethesda United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and chaired the church bazaar. Her hobbies included bridge and duckpin bowling. Phyllis Cox was born in Wil-
mington, Del., and raised in Washington, where she graduat- ed in 1938 from Roosevelt High School. In 1942, she married Bryce C. “Bill” Smink. Ernest H. “Brad” Bradley, 75, a former guidance counselor at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, died June 22 at his home in East Calais, Vt. He had leukemia. Mr. Bradley spent 17 years at
Walt Whitman before retiring in 1995 and moving to Vermont. Be- fore Walt Whitman, he had taught at an alternative school in Glen Echo, the Edmund Burke School and Field School, both in Washington, and Bethesda-Che- vy Chase High School. Ernest Howell Bradley was born in Lynchburg, Va. He gradu- ated from Arlington County’s Washington-Lee High School in 1952 and served in the Army for three years. After his Army serv- ice, he graduated from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vt. In 1977, he received a master’s degree in guidance counseling from Catho- lic University. He enjoyed landscape garden-

Alexander Adler, 90, a long- time NIH medical writer and ad- ministrator who retired in 1984 as a deputy director of the Public Health Service’s Health Resourc- es Administration, died June 22 at Carriage Hill nursing home in Bethesda. He had heart ailments. Mr. Adler, a one-time pharma- ceutical advertising executive, spent much of his early career at the National Institutes of Health. His NIH assignments included serving as information officer in the research grants and physi- cian manpower divisions. He was the first editor of the NIH Rec- ord, an in-house publication, and played violin in the NIH orches- tra. In 1973, he joined the Health Resources Administration. For several years, he was focused on agency relations with federal, state, county and city govern- ments. He retired as deputy di- rector of the division of student assistance, a financial aid pro- gram for students entering health professions. Mr. Adler, a longtime Bethesda resident, was born in New York to Jewish immigrants from Hun- gary. He attended the City Col- lege of New York and George Washington University, among other schools. During World War II, he
served in the Army Medical Corps, specializing in the re- search of tropical diseases. In retirement, he was a health communications consultant and did volunteer work for the Mont- gomery College Foundation and Suburban Hospital’s advisory council.
Among other affiliations, he was a fellow of the American Medical Writers Association, a past president of the Washington Society for the History of Medi- cine and a past national exec- utive committee member of the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A. A few years ago, he funded a
sculpture by Phillip Ratner to honor Jews who served in the U.S. military since the American Revolution. The artwork is at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington in Rockville. His wife, Ruth Gratt Adler, whom he married in 1942, died in 2004. Survivors include two daugh- ters, Alison Adler of Washington and Linda Adler of North Beth- esda; and two grandchildren. —Adam Bernstein
