Passed away July 15, 2010 at the age of 87 in Fairfax, VA. Raised in St. Paul, MN, where he graduated from St. Tomas College with honors. He served in the Army through WWII, after a brief tenure in the FBI he joined the CIA in 1952 and retired after 25 years service as a Security Officer. Jerry's later pride and joy, was American Legion Post #177, where he was a long time member and Past Commander. He will be sorely missed by the Legion and the community at St. Leo's Catholic Church, his spiritual home since 1956. He was the beloved husband for 49 years of the late Josephine Gabriel; and following her passing he married long time friend, Alice Fitterer, also until her death. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia; his son, William and daughter-in-law, Deborah; granddaughters, Carrie Hughes, Kelly Callis, and Kathleen Gabriel; and great-granddaugh- ters, Josephine and Haily, all of theWashington area. Willie was born in East Hartford, CT and grew up in nearby Glastonbury. She earned a BA ('69) and MA ('70) from the American University, and a JD from the University of Maryland ('79). She lived abroad for many years in Africa and Europe as a foreign service spouse. During the 80's and 90's she was very active as a Home and Hospital teacher for MCPS and as a member of the Council on Teen Pregnancy, for which she received many awards. She also taught ESOL in Montgomery County and volunteered her time at Camp Friendship in Unity. She rode horses most of her life and was an active member of HCIB Hounds. She loved to walk the puppies each spring and summer. Willie was the loving wife of Robert Hammond, the devoted mother of Robin Lerner and Mary Macklin, the proud grandmother of August and Maggie, and the doting owner of Garth, Bandit, Louie and Bob.

When she was in her 70's, Ms. Garrett did volunteer work for the United College Ministries in Northern Virginia. She lived most of her life at the Lynchburg Training School, Colony, VA, before moving to an apartment managed by Sheltered Homes of Alexandria, where she lived for 18 years and moved to The Hermitage in 1997. Mrs. Needels was the daughter of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Wiley B. and Annabel Rutledge. Mrs. Needels was a graduate of Sidwell Friends, 1940, and the University of Colorado, 1944. She also studied at the Phillips Gallery Art School and worked several years at the National Gallery of Art. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Theodore S. Needels, of Washington , D.C., her brother Neal P. Rutledge of Bethesda, Maryland, eight nephews and nieces , and nine grand nephews and nieces.


Col. Hemphill married his wife the late Eliza- beth Anne (“Betty”) Roach Hemphill in 1942, while an aviation cadet at Mitchell Field in Stamford, Texas. He earned his wings and was subsequently commissioned an officer in the US Army Air Corps. He saw World War II combat service in the Pacific with the decorated 507th Fighter Group, flying his beloved P-47 fighter aircraft (nicknamed “The Flying Erector Set” because it was construct- ed from damaged aircraft parts). At the end of the war Col. Hemphill elected to remain in what became the US Air Force, serving for over 26 years as a pilot, judge advocate, operations planner, and diplomat. He held the designation of senior command pilot and flew a wide range of aircraft including the P-47, P- 51, B-25, B-29, T-33, and C-47. Col. Hemphill had tours of duty in Palestine with the UN under the leadership of Dr. Ralph Bunche during the formation of the State of Israel; the Strategic Air Command (SAC) under the legendary General Curtis B. LeMay; the Fifth Air Force in Japan; the Office of the Air Force Chief of Staff in the Pentagon; and the US Army Command and General Staff College. Fluent in spoken Japanese, Col. Hemphill was proudest of his service as Air Attaché at the American Embassy in Tokyo, Japan from 1964 to 1967, serving under the leadership of US Ambassador Edwin O. given to foreigners, the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Third Degree, from the government of Japan in recognition of his distinguished service to both countries. He was also the recipient of the Air Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Distinguished Unit Citation, and numerous other military decorations.


Col. Hemphill was an active member and leader of several church congregations, including the Old Presbyterian Meeting House (Alexandria, VA), Tokyo Union Church (Tokyo, Japan), and Christ Church Uniting Disciples and Presbyterians (Kailua, HI). He authored or co-authored two church histories: A Church For All Seasons, Tokyo Union Church 1872- 1972 (1972) and The Crossroads Witness (1988). Col. Hemphill was also a clever and gifted storyteller, and published a book of humorous children’s stories entitled Harrison the Bunny and the Black Mysterious Gang (1992). He was also a prolific poet, and compiled a book of poetry entitled Hand Me Downs (1996).


Upon retirement from military service, Col. Hemphill lived in Hawaii for 20 years, serving as a legislative staff member in the Hawaii State Legislature. He subsequently moved to Olympia, WA, where he also lived for 20 years, writing poetry, gardening, listening to his beloved big band jazz, and raising a series of irrepressible beagles. Col. Hemphill moved to Paradise Valley Estates in Fairfield, CA, in 2007, where he continued to live independently. He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth (“Betty”) Hemphill and his daughter Virginia Anne (“Gia”) Adams of Alexandria, VA. He is survived by his sons, Robert F. Hemphill, Jr. of Potomac, MD and David F. Hemphill of Kensington, CA; his sister, Janet Lydia Jenkins of Lincoln,NE;and his dear friend Mary Jane Van Buren of Salt Lake City, Utah. In addition, Col. Hemphill is survived by four granddaughters (Megan and Claire Adams of Alexandria, VA; Lydia Hemphill of Oakland, CA; and Elizabeth (“Bizzy”) Hemphill of Chicago, IL) and five great grandchildren, Aidan and Ainsley Simmons of Alexandria, VA; and Leo, Gus, and Daphne Confalone of Washington,DC.


A memorial service will be held for Col. Hemphill at Church of the Resurrection, 2280 North Beauregard St., Alexandria, VA on July 21,2010 at 3:30 p.m., followed by a reception. He will be buried with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery at 9 a.m. on July 22, 2010. LOIS FARQUHARSON LEADBETTER (Age 91)


Wife of Robert B. Leadbetter, formerly of Oxon Hill MD, died on March 16, 2010, in Westerly RI. She was born in Ilion NY, and grew up in Cold Spring NY. In 1941, she and her husband, a newly commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy, moved to Washington DC where he began his life- long career serving the Navy. They made their home in the Temple Hills/Oxon Hill suburbs of DC where she was instrumental in the life of church congregations in Congress Heights, Temple Hills,


Their five children include Robert B. Leadbetter, Jr. of Hollis, NH, Allen W. Leadbetter of Westerly RI, Janet L. Garrison of Rockville, MD, Alison A. Leadbetter-Hines of Silver Spring, MD, and Charles A. Leadbetter of White Plains, MD. Mrs. Leadbetter is survived by all five of her children, their spouses, 11 grandchildren, and 16 great- grandchildren, and was predeceased by her hus- band and one grandchild.


A funeral service was held in Westerly on March 20. A service will be held at the Arlington National Cemetery on July 23, 2010, at 11 a.m. Friends and family are invited to attend the inurnment service and are requested to meet at the Adminis- tration Building at Arlington Cemetery 30 minutes before the service.
