DIRECTOR’S REPORT
The period from January
2008 through to December 2009 was one that nobody will forget - the financial difficulties for the world economy and our own financial crisis in Ireland
are now well documented. These difficulties had
serious financial knock-on effects for drug services in Dublin. It was against this backdrop that the Ana Liffey Drug Project
continued to provide good quality services to one of society’s most vulnerable and marginalised groups.
the Fact that we did so is evidenced by the service statistics in the services report of this project update. the pain of recession from a service delivery point of view was felt in the fact that as the funding available to the ana Liffey drug project went down, the number of people and the level of need went up.
My previous report in the project update 2006 & 2007 explained how we had managed to address some operational difficulties to ensure that we were relevant to our clients’ needs. this allowed us to focus on making the project more accessible to our clients. We did this by working within a low threshold and non-punitive model. in this regard, it was heartening to be able to report our successes in 2006 & 2007, but we always knew that more could be done.
in 2008 & 2009, the focus was on making opportunities for change more accessible to our clients. creating opportunities for positive change is always important and the subtleties surrounding achieving this are immense. all people change; it is the circumstances that surround the individual that impact positively or negatively on their ability to change.
