services REPORT

it can often be helpful to try to bring services to people, rather than the other way around, an approach which contributed to the success of the work with coolmine tc. in 2009 we worked effectively to bring services to our clients, as well as supporting our clients to access services outside the ana Liffey.

enhancing accessibility often meant working in partnership. a key service development in this area was the establishment of an open access medical surgery at ana Liffey, in partnership with safetynet. a nurse-qualified project worker joined the team in June, and we started providing nursing interventions in July; a gp clinic started in october, providing one afternoon of open-access gp services per week. similarly, we have been working with the access housing unit of threshold housing to provide access to housing supports for our clients, and with clancy nightshelter, both of whom provide staff to ana Liffey on an in-reach basis.

a challenge in 2009 was moving services to no.51 Middle abbey street as it became available. the majority of the building was kitted out from March 2009; this meant

that we had more space available to us. some services transferred straight away to no.51 – the peer group and the groups we ran with coolmine tc benefited from being external to the drop-in spaces. similarly, as the surgery was physically located in no.51, medical services were based in no.51 from the outset. however, full drop-in services did not move to no.51 until november 2009, when work to the rear of the building was complete. the move to no.51 Middle abbey street gave us a larger drop-in space, a much improved smoking area, and opened the possibility of further service provision in no.48. More importantly, it was received positively by our clients.

of course, the service developments outlined here have been focused on because they were new initiatives during 2008 & 2009. it’s important to highlight that we continue to provide our other services also – in 2009, 41 people graduated from the programme in Mountjoy prison, where we hold two groups per week; similarly, we continued to work with the cdvec to offer literacy and communication inputs to our clients. our peer support programme continues to be an integral part of the ana Liffey. over
