What is G4?
G4 is the branch responsible for logistics and quartering. When people think logistics they are thinking about getting a product from A to B. In short they are right albeit partially. Logistics is the science of planning and carrying out the movement and maintenance of forces. In its most comprehensive sense, those aspects of military operations that deal with:
a. Design and development, acquisition, storage, movement, distribution, maintenance, evacuation, and disposition of materiel
b. Movement, evacuation and hospitalisation of personnel c. Acquisition or construction, maintenance, operation and disposition of facilities
d. Acquisition or furnishing of services
What is G4 DEFENCE?
G4 DEFENCE aims to uncover the world of military logistics, the solutions, the players, the importance of logistics and the work of logisticians. The quartering side of G4 DEFENCE will look at the accommodation both at home and on the battlefield by examining the solutions for a better quality of life at home, shelter and protection on operations. Produced bi-monthly utilising specialist journalists and experts from within the industry G4 DEFENCE is an informative read for those interested or directly involved.
Logistics
Many in the field rely heavily on the right equipment, spare parts, rations and ammunition reaching them before they run out particularly if they are on the frontline engaged in fighting. The supply route in country needs to remain open and secure otherwise the much needed supplies would not reach the intended recipients in time.
Further to the merger of the DLO and DPA, the MoD has transformed in many ways in regards to logistics. Some good and some questionable. With much equipment used by logisticians today from software, ICT, ships, aircraft to a myriad of land vehicles, G4 DEFENCE aims to give an overview of the what, where’s and how the supply chain works and whether there is Confidence in Logistics

Accommodation
Accommodation both in the field and at home is vital for not only moral but the much needed rest. Fatigue in operations can be as fatal as a bullet so it goes without question a soldier when off patrol needs to relax and recharge in comfortable surroundings that offer protection but most importantly afford the soldier a good night’s sleep. Back home it’s a different environment however providing the armed forces with the homes they deserve that are not substandard and that are modern. Whether living in single accommodation or married quarters the quality of the dwelling has to be up to scratch and indeed habitable. Much work has been done thus far by the Defence Estates with programmes such as SLAM (Single Living Accommodation Modernisation) and SFA (Service Families Accommodation) but more needs to be done.
