EDA moves on Camp Protection System

The European Defence Agency (EDA) has awarded a EUR 8 million contract to Rheinmetall Defence of Germany and Thales of France to create a

demonstrator camp protection system.

This three year programme is called the Future Interoperability of Camp Protection Systems (FICPS) and aims to develop methods and means to harmonise semi- static and mobile protection systems for the combined protection of co-located areas, camps and other critical infrastructure in high threat areas such as Afghanistan. These camps, or Forward Operating Bases (FOB) as

they are also referred to, can come up attack from a variety of threats such as unguided indirect munitions from artillery,

mortars and rocket systems. In addition there is an ever present threat from ground assault such as car and truck carried bombs and improvised explosive devices (IED) that are now the number one threat in Afghanistan. While some of these FOB are operated by just one country in many cases these are manned by a number of different countries who have their own equipment and methods for detecting and neutralising this threat.
