the acquisition and procurement process, right through to delivery. As well as long and short-term storage, DSDA provides support across the entire logistics spectrum, including maintenance, repair, refurbishment, processing, assembly and testing of even the most sophisticated weapon systems; as well as inventory control, quality assurance and inspection, and fast-track distribution for urgent requirements. DSDA’s most important storage facility in the UK is Ashchurch, in Gloucestershire. The site is the agency’s primary vehicle store, with over 191,000 sq metres of covered storage and over 59,000 sq metres external storage. Ashchurch also contains over 35,000 sq metres of controlled humidity environment storage. The facility is strategically located close to the M5, and has rail links for the export of vehicles to the next point in the logistics supply chain.

Keeping military vehicles in good
order, either during peacetime, or at different stages of the logistic supply process, is a challenging role that DSDA has implemented a number of specialised processes to achieve. Vast numbers of vehicles pass through the facility every year, and a significant proportion require maintenance and servicing in order to prevent degradation their parts. The Ashchurch facility includes a number of specialist Controlled Humidity Environment (CHE) facilities for the long term storage of vehicles in a corrosion free environment. The CHE warehouses prolong vehicle life by reducing the environmental humidity within the facilities with the use of de-humidifiers and dry air circulation. Vehicles are maintained in this controlled atmosphere due to the lack of the effects of condensation on vehicle parts; vehicles stored outside where humidity is much higher degrade at a much faster rate. By preserving moving parts, fuels and lubricants, the service life of the vehicles is extended, and the cost of maintenance is greatly reduced, giving significant long-term cost savings. As well as storage for military vehicles, DSDA also works with prime contractors and Original
