Northumberland’s 1,936 square miles are the most sparsely
populated in England, with 161 people spread over each mile
(compared to London’s 12,300). In England’s most northerly county,
there’s room for everyone to find, if not a place in the sun (after
all, that’s the North Sea rolling grey to the east), at least a beach
to themselves.
But what makes the stretch of coast between Holy Island in the
north and Warkworth in the south truly unique is the other expanse
that overwhelms you in this Border country: time. Along some 50
miles of coast you’ll find the cradle of English Christianity on Holy
Island; Bamburgh, the finest castle anywhere in this country and a
site continuously inhabited since the Iron Age; the Farne Islands,
where St Cuthbert sought retreat from human demands but found
