During the 1990s, when I was chief travel
writer for the Daily Telegraph, I visited
Northumberland for the first time and was
smitten. Then in 2004 I explored the county’s
coastline literally top to bottom for my book
The Coast Road - A 3,000 Mile Journey Round

Since then I have made annual sorties to the region, each time
exploring further its amazing diversity and uncrowded beauty.

Much of Northumberland’s white-sand coastline has been
designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are many
Sites of Special Scientific Interest too, offshore RSPB reserves, as
well as the finest collection of castles peppering coastal outcrops.
Haunted Bamburgh Castle is one such place. Within a slingshot,
standing sentry on their bluffs, are the neighbouring castles of
Warkworth, Alnwick, Dunstanburgh and Lindisfarne.
Everywhere you look in Northumberland, history stares back at
you. Bordering the southern county fringe running east to west is
Hadrian’s Wall, built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian to keep out
