BONSPIELS From Page 26: Lupus 'Spiel raises awareness, funds
bers, who raised awareness, helped fundraise, and curled! Te first Lupus ’Spiel went off without a hitch and raised $23,000. We raised money for the Lupus Foundation of Minnesota (LFM). Ten, we raised $33,000, also for LFM, in 2015. Tis past year, the tally rose to $55,000 and counting (the numbers are still coming in), and we donated our proceeds to Dr. Timothy Niewold, a research rheumatologist at the Mayo Clinic, to support his lab for lupus research. Because of the exciting promise of his research, the ’spiel will continue to fund Dr. Niewold, and we are excited to watch his progress. It has been said that there could be a cure within 10 years. So, we are press- ing for that goal by doing everything we can. Te next Lupus ’Spiel is May 12-14, 2017, where we will have Cheryl Ber-
nard as a celebrity skip (we’ve found out that it’s good to plan about a year ahead, especially when inviting skips). Te ’spiel comprises a three-game guarantee of full eight-end games, a
silent auction, a live auction, and a dinner/dance. Tose who raise the most money get to pick their celebrity skip. Celebrity skips in the past have in- cluded: John Morris, Val Sweeting, Scott Howard, Allison Pottinger, Richie Ruohonen, John Benton, and Todd Birr. Really, there a lots of ways to make it work. We solicited support from our local businesses, and had in-kind sponsors, too. We try to keep it simple, but effective. Tere also are curlers who have matching programs at their places of employment, which is a very powerful tool for raising funds. One fun thing we did was create unique curling mulligans invented by
FSCC’s Craig Nicko, which kept the atmosphere light-hearted, and raised lots of money. Some of the challenges included the registration system: initially, we used
the Fogerty Arena administration system to accept registrations. Trough an interactive process, we ended up using a combination of a registration system on our website and a link to make donations. We also included a direct donation link to our beneficiary, the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. And we are working on an all-inclusive system for next year. It’s a work in progress. Te ’spiel has a serious goal and deals with these serious issues, but does
so in a positive light. We have been blessed in that the media has given very good coverage to this ’spiel, and highlighted the issues. Te ’spiel is planning to expand so that it can increase its impact, with
ideas of incorporating a music concert, and potentially spreading the ’spiel to satellite locations. If you would like to be a part of this, or plan your own Pro Am, call us for help. We’d be happy to assist. I can be reached at 763- 780-3328, Ext. 18; 720-470-8049; or
reganbirr@fogertyarena.com. “We are extremely grateful for the support of the community and the
celebrity skips, and the generosity of the curling family,” Todd Birr said. For more information about lupus research at Mayo Clinic, visit: www.
