CHAMPIONSHIPS Points chase will determine U.S. teams for Cup

tion process to determine the men’s and women’s teams that will be invited to represent USA in this world-class event. As with the 2016 event, this means that all teams that meet the USCA

W

world championship eligibility criteria (must be U.S. citizens, and dues- paying members of a USCA club) may qualify to join the four Canadian teams (two women’s, two men’s) that will constitute Team North America in the WFG 2017 Continental Cup. Te USCA ad hoc committee formed to determine the 2016 selection

process convened again aſter it was announced that the Continental Cup would return to the U.S. in 2017, reviewed how the process worked the first time around, considered all of the criteria used to establish the process last year, and decided to continue with this same process with a slight change to the cutoff date set for accumulating points – which is now set at Nov. 22 vs. Nov. 17. Te open points chase process was selected because it most closely

aligned with the goals of the event and the USCA. Te criteria considered in establishing the selection process included: • Unique performance opportunity of the 2017 WFG Continental Cup of Curling.

• Competitive responsibility of representing USA and North Amer- ica.

• Athletic capacity and aptitude as it applies to this unique competi-

ith the return of the World Financial Group Continental Cup of Curling to Las Vegas in 2017, the U.S. Curling As- sociation (USCA) will again use an open points chase selec-

tive environment.

• Athlete training, competitive scheduling, and promotional oppor- tunities.

• Value of athlete exposure to the following, and how this relates to the vision of the USCA in terms of growing the sport through com- petitive excellence:

1. High-level competition 2. Playing in front of large crowds 3. Competing in a distracting environment 4. Performing as part of a larger team Points can be earned in World Curling Tour events, similar to the points

gathered for Order of Merit consideration in the USCA’s world team selec- tion process. For the 2017 Continental Cup selection, all team’s totals will start at zero

to begin the season, and points accumulated through Nov. 22, 2016, will be counted. Te ad hoc committee will monitor the points of all eligible teams, review all results for accuracy aſter the Nov. 22 cutoff, and determine which men’s and women’s teams will be invited to compete in the Continental Cup for USA (one men’s and one women’s team each, with a maximum of four players per team). Te members of the ad hoc committee are Derek Brown, USCA Direc-

tor of High Performance; Doug Pottinger, USCA AAC representative to the U.S. Olympic Committee; Ann Swisshelm, USCA National Women’s Team Coach; Phill Drobnick, USCA National Men’s Team Coach, and Rick Patzke, USCA Chief Executive Officer. n
