THE HACKS Rock on, recreational curlers! By Sue Cassidy, Orange County Curling Club I

wrote this for my column, “Curlers of Orange County,” for another publication and thought that I would share it with all of you as an anthem for the recreational curler: We Are Recreational Curlers

We are recreational curlers and we love this sport. We wear the costumes. We make the homemade trophies. We drink the

Fireball. We travel to bonspiels collecting new friends as we go. We take the sport seriously, but at the same time, we revel in the fun culture that is curling. But, we are also so much more than that. We support the curling supply stores, the curling shoe and broom and jer-

sey makers. We hold raffles to send our competitive teams to events. We put together curling leagues for the disabled, so they also can compete in a sport that focuses on their abilities, not their disabilities.

We organize the events, we volunteer at the competitions, we buy the tick-

ets, we buy the merch, hold up the signs, and we ring the cowbells. We are ambassadors of this great sport and we spread the word to non curl-

ers about how they can get involved. We are UBER fans to our curling elite. Someone has to treat our athletes

like the ROCK STARS that they are; so we covet the autographs, treasure the selfies, study their techiques so we can mimick their styles. Tat’s right. We are the recreational curlers who run the Learn to Curl and

Little Rocks programs and we hook them on the fun of the sport. We are like a farm team for the elite curlers. We milk as much fun out of the sport as we can while we teach and provide a place to play, and then we watch the cream rise to the top. We beam with pride as we watch them wear the flag of their club, their province, their state, their country and cry tears of joy along with them when our anthem is played on the world stage. We are recreational curlers, and we love this sport.
