short program to Le Corsaire, a very classical ballet piece. I have a pretty strong background in classical ballet so it is easy for me to trans- pose; it’s in my genre.” Zoueva, known as a tough taskmaster,
sings Chen’s praises. “What helps him is not just his physical
talent, but his mental talent,” she said. “He is totally involved in the work. You know, some- times he doesn’t say ‘hi’ or ‘bye,’ he just goes his own way. T at’s his persona, nothing wrong with that. But when you have new material to explore, he does it. It’s like a total transforma- tion from introvert to outgoing.”
Serafi ni noticed the diff erence in Chen
as soon as he returned to their training rink in Lakewood, California. “I was like, ‘Wow, Nathan, you look
amazing!’” she said. “I love the choreography; it really shows all the years of ballet. He takes his time and really feels the music. He puts every ounce of energy he has into each movement.” Chen won Finlandia Trophy in October,
defeating three-time World champion Patrick Chan of Canada. His fi rst Grand Prix event is Trophée de France later this month. T ere, he’s scheduled to compete against his idol Fernan- dez, as well as Rippon. He’s carrying his hard-
learned wisdom — about skating technique, choreography and, most of all, staying healthy — with him this season. “From age 16 to 17, there’s been a big
maturity,” he said. “My time at the (Colorado Springs) OTC taught me how to plan a season, when I’m supposed to taper. Little mistakes that could have been prevented, I know how to prevent in the future. “You know, if that injury happened
during an Olympic year, it would have been devastating. But if it had to happen, I’m glad it happened when it did, and I have time to learn from the mistake.”
