Tey earned 166.90 total points and their second-straight International Classic title. Rounding out Team USA’s efforts, Karina Manta and Joseph Johnson placed fifth with 137.76 points, and Danielle Tomas and Dan- iel Eaton finished eighth with 128.64 points. Kana Muramoto and Chris Reed claimed the silver for Japan with 151.18 points. Alexandra Paul and Mitchell Islam won bronze for Cana- da with 141.20 points. A preseason coaching change proved pos-
itive for Mariah Bell, who garnered silver — her first senior international medal — with a personal-best 184.22 points. Bell commenced training with Rafael Arutunian in Lakewood, California, just a month before traveling to Salt Lake City.
“It was important for me to come to this
event and show some improvement,” Bell said. “I already feel like I’ve made some huge strides. I’ve been focusing a lot on the technical side, and I know the artistic elements will continue to grow and develop through the rest of the season.” Bell’s “East of Eden” free skate included a
triple flip-half loop-triple Salchow jump series in the second half of the program, en route to a personal-best segment score of 123.58. Sixth af- ter the short program, Karen Chen rallied with a strong free skate to win the bronze medal with 162.08 points. Paige Rydberg and Emily Chan both made their senior international debuts, placing fifth and sixth with 149.35 and 139.43 points, respectively. Japan’s Satoko Miyahara won the ladies title with a total score of 206.75.
2016 U.S. INTERNATIONAL CLASSIC Team USA also took second and third
in the pairs event, with Jessica Calalang and Zack Sidhu earning silver ahead of Alexandria Shaughnessy and James Morgan. “It’s the first competition of the season,”
Sidhu said. “We really wanted to work on relat- ing to each other. Tat was the main goal. We didn’t really have a placement or score goal.” Te duo earned the top score in the short
program, landing a throw triple Lutz in their dramatic performance to “Te Prayer” by An- drea Bocelli and Céline Dion. Tey generated a total score of 151.24 points. In their international debut, Shaughnessy
and Morgan won the bronze medal with 140.08 points. Canadians Brittany Jones and Joshua Reagan secured gold with 155.48 points.
