Shibutanis heat up Rockefeller ice
Performing on the coldest April day in
New York in more than two decades, Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani warmed fans’ hearts by skating their wildly popular free dance to “Fix You” by Coldplay during a “Today” show appearance April 5 at Rockefel- ler Center. While “Today” hosts Willie Gault and
Savannah Guthrie bundled up, the Shibu- tanis — fresh off winning the World silver ice dance medal in Boston — performed in their competition costumes, which included Maia’s sleeveless dress. “It was very cold, but wonderful to
have the opportunity to skate before the ice closed for the season,” Maia said. “Skating outside for an audience at such a famous landmark in New York City was incredible.” The Shibutanis fi rst performed at Rocke-
feller Center for the “Today” show’s Christmas morning program in 2012. And with the sea- son they had, the “ShibSibs” will likely have future opportunities. “We are very proud of how we per-
formed throughout the season,” Maia said. “It’s an honor to be U.S. champions and World silver medalists, and we feel like our skating has reached a new level this year. We’re very excited to continue growing and pushing forward during the off season.”
