ARNESON Beverly J. (Odegaard)
Arneson, a longtime judge and volunteer with the Brae- mar City of Lakes FSC, died March 7, 2016, after a long struggle with many illnesses. She was 88. Bev began her judging
career as a member of Colorado Skating Club in Denver, and then, when a move back to the Twin Cities necessitated a change in clubs, she became a member of the Braemar City of Lakes FSC. She was a member and official for Braemar for
more than 30 years. She was on the local organizing committee in the Twin Cities for Skate America, U.S. Championships, Worlds and other qualifying com- petitions. She received her 40-year pin at the Twin Cities
Figure Skating banquet in September of 2014. Bev was a gold test judge, a senior competition judge and regularly judged at clubs throughout the up- per Midwest. Bev attended Mayville State Teacher’s college
and later St. Cloud State University to earn a degree in elementary education and later certification as a specialist in learning disabilities. She taught at a number of small school districts in Minnesota, North Dakota and Oregon, before she and her husband, Lyle, settled in the Twin Cities, where she began a long career with Robbinsdale School District #281. Bev was a tireless volunteer. She was a driver for
Dinner at Your Door for many years, and she loved to support the community outreach efforts at the Eliza- beth Circle at Calvary Lutheran Church. Additionally, she enjoyed her volunteer work with Fairview Hospi- tals, including many years in the hospital gift shops and on the Fairview Hospital Auxiliary Board. She is survived by her brothers, Doug and

On pages 12 and 60 of the March issue, it was reported that U.S. ladies champion Gracie Gold broke the free skate scoring record at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Saint Paul, Minnesota. While it was a personal-best score (147.96), the record belongs to Ashley Wagner, with 148.98 points at the 2015 U.S. Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina. SKATING magazine apologizes for the error.

FRENCH Patricia Staniland French, a
national and World singles, pairs and ice dance judge, national dance referee, as well as a na- tional and World synchronized skating judge and referee, died March 8, 2016, at her Washington, D.C.-area home. She was 74.
A longtime member of the Buffalo Skating Club and the Skating Club of Northern Virginia, Pat served on the ISU Technical Committee for syn- chronized skating and worked on dozens of U.S. Figure Skating committees. Her love of skating and history as a member of the Buffalo SC reflects on her mother, Buffalo SC member Janet Rice French, a national competitor in ladies singles. Pat was eager to participate in club ice shows
and ice buffets. Her focus was dance. She complet- ed her gold dances and seventh figure test. She enjoyed dance weekends, and with dance partner, fellow club member and former club president Donald Leslie, competed in local and regional dance competitions. She worked tirelessly representing the Buffalo
SC as test chairman, trial judge monitor, club histo- rian, chairman of North Atlantic Regional Compe- tition, vice president and president of the Niagara Frontier Association of Figure Skating Clubs, a del- egate to the U.S. Figure Skating governing council meetings and a member of the nationally ranked synchronized skating adult team, the Hot Fudge Sundaes, coached by Buffalo SC professional Sun- dae Bafo-leBel. U.S. Figure Skating chief historian Benjamin
Wright wrote in SKATING magazine: “At its 1994 Congress in Boston, the ISU formally accepted the
precision team skating discipline. A new technical committee was created, of which the first chairman was Patricia French. Without the diligent efforts of French, beginning at the 1990 Congress in Christ- church, New Zealand, the acceptance of the disci- pline may never have been achieved. The discipline was renamed synchronized skating in 1998.” In a SKATING magazine column from 1988,
French described some of the reasons she and oth- ers embrace the judging profession. “A judge’s reward is seeing the face of a skater
who has just passed a test or reached a personal goal through skating, making friendships with fel- low judges and skaters, and contributing to the advancement of our sport by participation at any level. Without the support and enthusiasm of our judges, our sport would stagnate and no standards would be set,” she wrote. After moving to Maryland in 2000, Pat con-
tinued to judge tests and competitions as much as she was able. She was an advocate for accessibility in facilities, having been confined to a wheelchair in her later years. She took up photography after moving to Maryland and won several awards for her photographs. “Pat was a tough but fair judge and had a
huge heart,” U.S. Figure Skating Secretary Heather Nemier said. “She was a mentor to me and many other judges as we worked our way up in the sys- tem. Figure skating was her passion, with synchro being closest to her heart. Her influence will be felt for generations and she will be missed.” In 2011, Patricia was recognized for 50 years of
service as a U.S. Figure Skating official. She is survived by her sister, Barbara French
Pace of Washington, D.C.; a niece, Catherine Pace Williamson; and a nephew, James P. Cameron. In rec- ognition of her devotion to figure skating, donations may be made to the U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund, 20 First Street, Colorado Springs, Colorado, 80906.
