In the spirit of the 2016 ISU World Figure Skating Championships, Boston’s Frost Ice Loft created an ice sculpture bust of NBC Sports commentators Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir. Frost Ice Loft, an establishment designed and furnished entirely of ice, is maintained at 21 degrees F. and features an artfully sculpted lounge that often includes special pieces that commemorate events around the city. Tara and Johnny, in a rare break from calling the action at TD Garden, unveiled the ice sculpture for fans, patrons and the media.

Boston rolled out the red carpet to the world with its opening cere- mony that featured an American Revolution theme.

Grant Hochstein, who placed 10th in Boston, balances train- ing with near full-time coaching in Artesia, California. His first teaching session kicks off at 6:15 a.m., and for the rest of the day he alternates between teaching and his own skating. “I teach seven days a week and I love it,” Hochstein said.

“Sometimes, though, I just want to relax and watch ‘Friends.’” Most often, Hochstein team coaches with his fiancée, three- time U.S. medalist Caroline Zhang. Hochstein focuses on jump technique, while Zhang is the “spin doctor.” “I’m kind of envious of guys who just come in and skate,”

he said. “A lot of them, especially at this level, can take an hour to warm up for their sessions and have a six-hour day.” All in all, though, Hochstein is grateful. Building a coach-

ing reputation now will help him and Zhang transition into the business full time when they retire from competition. “I just want to make a difference in these kids’ lives,” he said. “I was with my first coach [Lindsay O’Donoghue] until I was 22, and she had a huge impact on me, and now my coaches Karen [Kwan-Oppegard] and Peter [Oppegard] have a huge impact on me. It’s cold, but I enjoy doing it.”

Gracie Gold answers questions from the media following her event-best short program. 30 MAY 2016 Max Aaron gets mentally ready to take the ice, with his coach Tom Zakrajsek looking on.
