Skate America returning to Chicago
For the second time in three years, Skate
America will be held in Chicago as the event kicks off the 22nd edition of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series. Skate America, scheduled Oct. 21–23, 2016, will again take place at the Sears Cen- tre in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. “We are excited to be returning to the
Chicago area for this prestigious internation- al competition,” U.S. Figure Skating President Samuel Auxier said. “The support of the local organizing committee and the fans in 2014 made our decision to return an easy one.” 2014 Skate America marked the first time since the 1946 U.S. Championships that
the Greater Chicago area had hosted a major skating event. The Grand Prix Series includes six com- petitions held in October and November in the United States, Canada, Japan, China, Rus- sia and France. Skaters are awarded points at two events in which they compete. The top six point-earners in each discipline secure spots at the ISU Grand Prix Final in Marseilles, France, Dec. 8–11. A complete roster of competitors will be
announced in late June.
HQ Profile: Karissa Woienski I am the Figure Skating Programs Man-
ager for Athlete Development at U.S. Figure Skating headquarters. I am responsible for managing several different programs, includ-
ing the solo dance series, adult skat- ing, theatrical skat- ing and high school programs. What is your
favorite part of the job? It has been getting to talk with our members and helping to answer
their questions about getting involved in the programs I manage. What do you like to do in your spare
time? Skate! I started skating when I was 14 and I’m working on my junior moves in the field right now. Once I’m done with moves and freestyle, I want to start working on my dance tests. What would people be surprised to
know about you? I speak Mandarin Chinese and a little bit of Russian. I studied abroad in Beijing during college and loved it, especially the food. What would be your ideal vacation?
I love going home to Montana any chance I get. Colorado is beautiful, but nothing beats Big Sky Country — especially in the winter- time when there’s lots of snow. Tell us a little bit about your family: I
have an older brother and a younger sister, but the real star of the family is our shih-tzu, Pippin. I’m pretty sure he’s my parents’ favor- ite.
