medley of tango selections. “It was the last time for us to perform these skates this season, so our goal was just to do the best we possibly could and whatever happened, happened,” Michael said.

Both medal-winning couples said they plan

to meet with their coaching team, led by Alexei Killiakov, and decide if they will move up to the senior ranks next year. Mitch Moyer, senior director of athlete high

performance at U.S. Figure Skating, said the two teams have developed a “healthy rivalry,” pushing each other daily while distancing themselves from the other teams in the world. Hiwatashi, the U.S. junior champion, entered

Tomoki Hiwatashi showed a lot of fl air and landed a total of three triple Axels en route to the bronze medal.

sia’s Alla Loboda and Pavel Drozd won the bronze medal. Elliana Pogrebinsky and Alex Benoit of the U.S. placed fourth. In December at the Junior Grand Prix Final,

McNamara and Carpenter scored 158.26 points, while the Parsons tallied 144.41 points for their third-place fi nish. T e Parsons, like their training mates, entered

the World Junior Championships with the goal of showing improvement and skating their best. To-

gether since February 2010, they performed their Cinderella short dance and their free dance to a

the free skate in sixth place, but took advantage of mistakes by the leaders to claim a spot on the podi- um with 222.52 points. Vincent Zhou of the U.S. placed fourth in both segments and fi fth overall with 221.19 points. Israel’s Daniel Samohin jumped from ninth in the short program to win with 236.65 points. Canada’s Nicolas Nadeau, eighth after the short program, earned the silver medal. “I was very nervous, but at the same time

there were a lot of people cheering for me,” Hi- watashi said. “It was really fun out there; I did a clean program. When I landed the second triple Axel I just felt I was going to make it.” Hiwatashi, who was a substitute for an in-

jured Nathan Chen, said he didn’t have any expec- tations of placing on the podium. “I was only aiming for top eight or 10,” he said. “I just wanted America to get three places for Junior Worlds (next year) and that was the only thing I was thinking about.”

Hiwatashi, who landed the triple Axel for the

fi rst time in competition on his 16th birthday at the U.S. Championships in January, landed the jump three times in Hungary. “He’s greatly improved this season,” Moyer said. “Both he and Vincent really stepped up after Nathan’s untimely injury.” For the ladies, Tyler Pierce fi nished sixth and

Bradie Tennell, fourth after the short program, placed 11th for the U.S.

“Consistency is the key to success, especially in the junior ladies event,” Moyer said. “Our ladies have the ability to be competitive if they put out two strong performances and limit their mistakes. T at said, the results were much improved from last season.” Japan’s Marin Honda won the event with 192.98 points. Russia’s Maria Sotskova captured the silver medal, with Japan’s Wakaba Higuchi fi n- ishing with the bronze. In pairs, Chelsea Liu and Brian Johnson paced the U.S. with a fi fth-place fi nish. Lindsay Weinstein and Jacob Simon, U.S. junior silver medalists, fi nished ninth, while U.S. junior cham- pions Joy Weinberg and Maximiliano Fernandez placed 10th.

“Liu and Johnson had a diffi cult season with

two diff erent injuries to Liu that kept them from training most of the season,” Moyer said. “Even with the injuries, improvement was evident, and I look for them to have a strong season next year in juniors.”

Anna Duskova and Martin Bidar of the

Czech Republic won the event with 181.82 points. Two teams from Russia secured silver and bronze.
