Holiday season SkateFests a huge success

U.S. Figure Skating hosted four

SkateFests over the holiday season, in- troducing hundreds of people to the ice across the nation. Two SkateFest events took place at the

Museum of Feelings hosted by The Rink at Brookfield Place in New York on Dec. 5 and Jan. 9. Two others were conducted on Dec. 19 at the John Breslow Ice Hockey Cen- ter at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and at Acacia Park in downtown Colorado Springs, Colorado. 2006 Olympic ice dancers Melissa

Gregory and Denis Petukhov served as hosts of the New York events, while the members of the UNL hockey team were on hand to help the skaters in Nebraska. Colorado-based members of Team USA, including 2015 U.S. pairs champions Alexa Scimeca and Chris Knierim, Mariah Bell, Jordan Moeller, Karina Manta and Joseph Johnson, and Lindsay Weinstein and Jacob Simon attended the event at Acacia Park, giving skills demonstrations and skating with participants. “Each event brought hundreds of par-

ticipants to the ice, generating excitement about skating throughout the country,” Susi Wehrli-McLaughlin, senior director of membership at U.S. Figure Skating, said. U.S. Figure Skating created SkateFests

to encourage people of all ages to take to the ice for fun, participate in a free skating lesson, meet members of Team USA, take home souvenirs and learn how to get more involved with local skating programs.
