by LYNN RUTHERFORD Even the weather cooperates for Meryl Da-
vis and Charlie White. Te duo warmed up for an exhibition at
Rockefeller Center, and they barely needed jack- ets. At a sunny 64 degrees, this mid-October day was the most glorious anyone there could remem- ber for the opening of New York’s iconic skating rink.
“Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, plus
a few local NBC affiliates, were on hand for tele- vised interviews. Girls from Figure Skating in Harlem turned out in force, eager to see their idols. Te skaters greeted several by name and were genuinely happy to pose for endless pictures. “We love what we’re doing,” White said.
“All of these opportunities, the excitement sur- rounding them from a fan perspective, are just great. Maybe we didn’t know the height of the (1990s) skating boom, but we’re very excited with the direction we’re taking.” Rockefeller Center kicked off a season that took the 2014 Olympic ice dance champions halfway around the world: Hawaii, Texas and Florida; Italy and Japan; New Year’s in Lake Plac- id, New York; and this month, a stint in Switzer- land for “Art on Ice.” Tey’ll also headline three Disson Skating specials and make appearances for charities and sponsors. Independently, Davis’ ballroom danc- ing and brand ambassador duties for Vera Brad- ley handbags and accessories keep her busy, while White has a budding coaching career. “Our lives are a blur,” White laughed. “I
know what I’m doing the next four or five weeks. At that point, it starts to get a little hazy, because I can’t think quite that far ahead.” “I wasn’t expecting to still be so busy, more
than a year and a half after the Olympics,” Davis said. “It’s a fabulous thing and I’m so honored.”
A fairy tale career? Professional success is just the latest chap-
ter in a story that reads like a skating fairy tale: Born 10 months apart in the same Troy, Michi- gan, hospital. Raised by supportive families who lived 10 minutes apart. Six U.S. titles (2009–14), two World crowns (2011, ’13), an Olympic sil- ver medal (2010), an Olympic team competition bronze medal (2014) and the first Olympic gold for a U.S. ice dance team (2014). A lucrative gig
