Rhode Island skaters ring in the holidays

Rhode Island skating clubs per- formed in an ice show titled “Holiday Celebration and Tree Lighting” on Dec. 5 in Providence. The hour-long show, produced by skating great Michelle Kwan, Sarah Mirza DiNardo and Brad Vigorito, featured group numbers performed by the Smith- fi eld FSC and Warwick FS. The show included the Ocean State Ice Theatre teams from the Pawtucket and Prov- idence FSC performing their “Annie” and “The Grinch Who Stole Christ- mas” routines.

Several soloists performed, includ- ing Eastern Sectional competitors Jamiesen Cyr, Giorgina Giampaolo, Tori Rotella and Vigorito, as well as the 2015 intermediate champion Kassandra Carpentier.

Ross Miner, the 2013 U.S. silver med- alist and bronze medalist at 2015 Rostelecom Cup, was the evening’s special guest; he entertained the crowd with his performance.

Beth Duxbury served as the event’s emcee . She performed in a group number demonstrating school fi g- ures, while explaining the history of Rhode Island skating.

Guests were also excited to see Kwan skate in the opening number.

Telemundo, a major American Spanish-language television network, recently spent more than two hours fi lming skaters at Paramount Iceland in Paramount, California. “We had 12 minutes of airtime over the two-hour morning news,” said Darlene Sparks, director of fi gure skating at Par- amount Iceland. “It was incredible. They interviewed three skaters and fi lmed the kids’ routines as well. All in Spanish! This is the number-two Spanish news station. We have offi cially tapped into a huge, new California market.”

Kerry Murphy, director of the Skokie Park District’s fi gure skating program at the Skatium Ice Arena in Skokie, Illinois, spent a morning in November organizing a skating display at the Skokie Public Library. “At our last committee meeting, we talked about having each of our Basic Skills rinks contact their local libraries to see about getting access to either a display board or to put advertising within their building for the holidays,” Murphy, the 2014 Basic Skills director of the year, said.
