skirt the shores of the Mohawk River. Alone with my thoughts, I doze off until the conductor wakes me for Rochester. Train travel is an experience like no
other. Take advantage the next time you can. Don’t hesitate to fly Amtrak for your next trip. —OTTO M. VONDRAK
Along the Rails 2016 Did you get trackside with your camera
in 2016? Did you capture something rare, interesting, or scenic? If so, you might consider sharing your photos with our readers in our annual “Along the Rails” photographic year in review. This special PHOTO LINE will appear in our April 2017 issue. This year we’ll be accepting slides
and digital images, and you’ll have the option of uploading your photos to our FTP server instead of mailing them. The rules are simple: any photo of any rail subject can be submitted, as long as it was taken in 2016. Each photographer can submit up to ten photos for consideration. For those of you with slides, we strongly recommend you have them scanned and submit them digitally. If you do not have a scanner, you’ll have to hire an outside slide scanning service. If you want to submit your original slides, put the slides in a 20-slide sheet (even though you are submitting ten or fewer). Enclose caption information on a separate sheet of paper. You must include a valid email address for correspondence or you will not be considered for publication. Package everything up securely and send it in. Digital photos can be submitted as
TIFs or uncompressed JPGs. Images should be at 300 d.p.i. and be at least ten inches across the long dimension (3000 pixels across). You can check image size in programs such as Photoshop. Photos can be adjusted for color and contrast, but should not be otherwise enhanced (i.e., don’t add or subtract any features that were not present when the photo was taken). Send us the entire image and leave any cropping to us. Digital shooters have a couple of options for submitting their images. The “old” way is to put your images on a CD and mail them in. Also put a Word or text document on the CD with caption information and make sure each caption is keyed to the file name of
each photo. You must include a valid email address for correspondence or you will not be considered for publication. All CDs will be disposed of after the feature is printed. If you want to submit your images electronically, send an email to
editor@railfan.com. We’ll send you instructions on uploading your images to our FTP server. The deadline for submissions is February 13, 2017. For those mailing slides or CDs, send your package to our new editorial address, RAILFAN & RAILROAD, P.O. Box 817, Swedesboro, N.J. 08085. If you use FedEx or UPS, send your package to RAILFAN & RAILROAD, 1950 Kings Highway #817, Swedesboro, N.J. 08085. Clearly mark “Photo Line 2016” on the outside of the envelope. We’ll also be selecting the cover and
PARTING SHOT from the submissions, so be sure to include a few vertical shots for consideration. Don’t forget caption information and to key your captions to your file names or an identifying number on your slides. The easier it is to properly match your material, the better your chances are of getting selected. Good luck! — S.B.

Did you enjoy the colorful “Streamliners 2016” feature we ran in the December issue? We accidentally credited the photos with the byline “as noted” when instead it was solely the work of John C. Benson who attended the spectacular in Australia and provided all of the fine photos, including the cover shot. You might also recognize John by his alias, “Mr. Slides.” Also in the December issue, while
we got it right in the feature byline, we messed up the spelling of Don Heimburger’s name in the table of contents. You might also know Don as the proprietor of Heimburger House Publishing. While rare gaffes with names are embarrassing, please don’t hesiate to send us your feature stories and news photos! Editors Stoov Boary and Ortho VonDark will give them each their full attention and consideration.
