Rio Grande 488 at Durango Acrylic on Canvas, 18x24” ©2006 Bryan E. Neumann In 1953, Durango, Colo., was still an active stop on the narrow-gauge Rio Grande railroad. Today it’s one of the most magical vacation spots in the U.S. This view takes you back a few years, and invites you to link the peaceful past with a rather striking present. A 1948 Ford truck complements the Baldwin Class K-36 2-8-2 narrow gauge and depot. A few passengers are waiting to board the train, eager to enjoy the spectacular view.
The ‘burg Acrylic on Canvas, 84x48” ©2002 Ron Hatch Galesburg, Ill., on the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, was the hub of its lines east, or as the billboard across from the depot proclaimed, “The Buckle in the Cornbelt.” With lines fanning out in five directions, the Burlington’s Galesburg depot and division headquarters was a busy place. In this late-1930s scene, a freight heads out for Chicago as the Denver Zephyr pauses. The engineer on the local the next track over is checking out this “overgrown doodlebug.” (Courtesy of the Galesburg Burlington Credit Union)
