Orders Pastels, 25x32” ©1998 Stewart Buck The aroma of wood smoke permeates the frigid winter air. Wispy curls of smoke rise from chimneys to the starry twilight sky above, and families settle into the warm comfort of their homes. Suddenly the solitude is broken by the melodious wail of a locomotive whistle calling for orders. Around the curve thunders a Chicago & North Western R-1 Ten-Wheeler with an eastbound freight as the agent trudges through the crunchy snow to “hoop up” the orders for the engineer. This artwork was created to evoke a time when there was constant activity and drama “down at the depot.”

Pacific Limited, Westbound at Topeka, Kansas, Union Station Oil on Linen, 24x36” ©2008 C.L. Smith The artist spent a lot of time on this station platform watching the steady parade of Union Pacific and Rock Island steam and diesels in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Other memories include the eerie silence that resulted when new technology replaced the “roar” of telegraph keys in the west end of the main concourse, and the great Kaw Valley flood of 1951 that brought the Kansas River up to the lower roofs of the depot. The “Overland Depot” still stands, the platforms long gone, an ugly chain fence surrounding it. The Rock Island mainline, which joined just west of the depot and provided joint trackage into Kansas City, is now part of the Union Pacific.

2:21 a.m. Arrival Pen and Ink, 6x5.75” ©2016 Jeff Hartmann It’s early morning as the late night freight is dragged into the station by a high-wheeled 2-6-0. The graveyard shift station agent gets out of his chair to go out and have a word with the train crew. This circa-1900 scene was staged using photographs of HO-scale models for reference. The line art was inspired by and produced specifically for this feature.
