Down at the Depot
The Hiawatha Casein, 32x42”
©1994 Mark Harland Johnson This painting is an homage to the artist’s parents: “They are seen walking up the sidewalk to the left, a depiction of their morning out on December 7, 1941. They had been addressing their wedding invitations, so they met that morning and had just dropped the invitations in the mail. They went to breakfast after stopping at the post office, only to learn the Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor. The wedding ceremony was cancelled before anyone received the wedding announcement, since my dad was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Air Corps ROTC. They got married by a Justice of the Peace and Dad got on the train to head out to war.”
Belvidere Depot Memories Acrylic on Canvas, 18x24” ©2016 Rick Borrett This work was created from a circa-1939 photograph from the Roy Peterson collection, courtesy of sons Rory and Cedric Peterson. Roy Peterson’s passion for trains is reflected in this painting, and celebrated by the creative energy of the artist. The depot no longer exists, and the steam engine, an Atlantic, no longer runs along these tracks. Americana such as steam engines and old train depots evoke deep emotions of nostalgia. Our hearts are moved by such memories, and those feelings are captured on canvas in this painting.
