LIGHT RAIL, RAPID TRANSIT, AND COMMUTER RAIL NEWS
Hurontario Light Rail Project Moves Forward
Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx have issued a request for qualifications for interested companies to design, build, finance, operate, and maintain the Hurontario LRT project. The new LRT project will bring 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) of new trackage to the Mississauga and Brampton areas near Toronto. The proposed line connects the Port Credit GO Transit station to Gateway terminal with connections to GO Transit’s Milton and Lakeshore lines. Construction is to begin in 2018 and be complete by 2022.
The Heat is on for Houston Metro Rail
Light rail and buses will take center stage for people attending Super Bowl LI in Houston. Barring further delays, the newest part of the system — the Green Line extension to the Magnolia Park Transit Center — may be open for service just a few days prior to the big game. The holdup has been the construc- tion of the Harrisburg Bridge over the
Union Pacific mainline. Locals wanted an underpass, but environmental concerns forced the $587 million project to be completed as an overpass. Once finished, the entire system will be ready for the throngs of visitors. Plans call for additional trains, buses, and shuttles to keep people moving during the January 28-February 5 events.
World Series Win for Chicago Mass Transit
With the Chicago Cubs playing and winning the World Series, the Chicago Transit Authority and Metra were big winners in terms of moving the masses and flying the team’s flag.
For games 3, 4, and 5, CTA brought out its World Series Special — a set of 2400-series cars built in the 1970s and decorated with special banners. The special operated on the Red Line before each game’s start time from 95th/Dan Ryan and back to Howard. The restored cars feature their original American Bicentennial striping and the interiors feature reprinted car advertising cards from the era.
Metra experienced the busiest day in its history on Friday, November 4, as Chicago Cubs fans celebrated the team’s first World Series win in more than a century. On that day Metra carried more than 460,000 passengers (based on preliminary numbers) to the Cubs victory parade and rally, shattering the record of 430,488 passengers on July 3, 2007, for fireworks and Taste of Chicago. The Chicago Blackhawks victory parade and rally on June 28, 2013, is in third place with 425,241 rides.
San Diego Orders 45 New Light Rail Cars
San Diego Metropolitan Transit System has placed an order with Siemens for 45 new S70 light rail vehicles. The new vehicles will allow service enhancements on existing rail lines and provide the necessary LRVs to operate the 11-mile extension of the UC San Diego Blue Line that is now under construction. Siemens has been providing LRVs to
MTS since 1981. This order will bring the total number of vehicles supplied
An Outstanding New Title from Signature Press! The McCloud River Railroads, Jeff Moore
From the 19th century to date, there has been a railroad serving the McCloud River area around Mt. Shasta, California, originally to support the lumbering of the McCloud Riv- er Lumber Company. Tis book provides a history of that railroad under its various own- ers, and of the equipment and operations. In 1977, the leasing company Itel purchased the railroad, in part as a vehicle for operating Incentive Per Diem box cars. In 1992, the Forbis family purchased the railroad, renamed it the McCloud Railway, and continued to serve on-line industries as well as initiating the Shasta Sunset Dinner Train operation. Tis is the most complete account of the history, construction and operation of the Mc- Cloud railroads ever published. It will be enjoyed by railroad enthusiasts everywhere.
