where the eastbound train meets a west- bound coal train with two Chicago & North Western widecab GEs. Great sound matched with very competent camera- work makes this a favorite of mine. The chase is a rainy and wet one through a part of the country I wouldn’t really rate as especially scenic, and yet the camera- man manages to find several creative and interesting angles that help put the train in context with the raw and open scenery it travels through. must be like to live in Gibbon, Neb. All I can say is “thank goodness there is an overpass in town,” because it looks like there’s a train going through literally ev- ery few minutes. You might as well put your vehicle in park and eat lunch if you get stuck at a crossing, because you’re going to be there for awhile. We see a nice variety of UP stan- dard-cab and wide-cab units with some sweet-sounding horns and some run- through power from Norfolk Southern, Burlington Northern, and Southern Pacific. Throw in a train with a UP SD90MAC pushing hard on the rear and this chapter is a real treat to watch. As if all this UP goodness wasn’t enough, there is one heck of a bonus to follow. We are treated to several min- utes’ worth of pacing UP freights at track speed in eastern Wyoming in 1987. SD40-2s are squadron power during this era, and to drive alongside a bunch of them in run 8 at track speed is a nice trip down memory lane. Turn up your speak- ers here because the sound is amazing. All too soon this title wraps up and


we are definitely left wanting more. The 1990s saw the classic power like the SD40-2s and DD40s giving way to new wide-cab units, and we see a nice mix of both here. This DVD gives you a ton of action for a very fair price. — FRANK GARON
