Eric Powell, media relations manager, “Our mechanical and operating team came up with the idea. We have a lot of veterans working for INRD, so our employees thought it would be appropriate to recognize all U.S. Armed Forces veterans for their dedication to protecting freedom. SD40-2 No. 4005 was chosen due simply to timing; it was the next locomotive in line to receive a new coat of paint at the time the idea came together.” No. 4005 was put into general service
in mid-November, serving throughout the INRD system.
Six-Axle Power for Indiana Northeastern
The Indiana Northeastern added two SD40-2s to its all-EMD roster. One of
them, former CEFX No. 3125, was built as an SD45 but was rebuilt to an SD40-2. Both are PTC-equipped, which is required to access the Norfolk Southern yard in Montpelier, Ohio. These are the railroad’s first six-axle locomotives, which will be put to the test handling the loaded grain trains.
Buffalo & Pittsburgh
The Buffalo & Pittsburgh had operational changes during November. Following the run of train BF-1 on November 1, the signals at CP GJ and Gravity were removed from service and taken out, leaving this stretch of track on the NS Buffalo Line handled as yard territory. This brings to an end the old Pennsylvania Railroad position light signals in this part of New York, as
signals at Wales, N.Y., were removed as well. All B&P operations are now controlled by track warrant through these areas. On November 9, a fire broke out in
the former Bethlehem Steel buildings near Area D on the former South Buffalo Railway in Lackawanna, N.Y. The blaze could be seen for miles, and curtailed all operations on the former SBRR until the fire was under control a couple of days later. Genesee & Wyoming acquired the SBRR in 2001, and it is operated as part of the B&P.
Expanded Roster for Carload Express
On October 20, Carload Express, Inc., acquired several MP15s from Union Pacific’s recent auction, including UPY
Great Lakes Central
Great Lakes Central Extra North (Z624- 13 on CSX) is pulling a loaded fertilizer train out of the siding in Howell, Mich., on November 13 to take approximately 60 fertilizer cars to Durand, Mich., to interchange with the Huron & Eastern for delivery to Zilwaukee, Mich. Because the interchange is limited and in the southwest quadrant at Ann Pere on the east side of Howell, CSX will drop the cars in the north siding in Howell. Great Lakes Central will come into Howell, tie onto the cars in the siding, pull all of the cars west out of the siding, then shove east to and around the connection track. Once on their own rails they will then head north.

Sneaky Blee GEs
Canadian National’s Bessemer & Lake Erie received a Herzog ballast train powered by a pair of GE C44-9WLs from the Buffalo & Pittsburgh in Butler, Pa., that originated on the CN in Buffalo, N.Y. Upon receiving the train, BLE dumped ballast on the south end of the line and ran north to reload at the P&C docks on Lake Erie at Conneaut, Ohio. It then borrowed the two CN units to run a southbound ore train to Pittsburgh, Pa. After stalling climbing up the hill from the docks and then making it on a second attempt, the southbound trip commenced. The ore train is entering CTC territory at RX Junction in Albion, Pa, on November 12.
