CAST IRON FENCE A UNIQUE BEAUTY


New Orleans is a city with unique architecture. Notable is the French Quarter, with its flat-tiled roofs, colorful stucco and iconic iron balconies. In contrast is the modernist Louisiana Superdome built with 1970s tastes that has become a part of the city’s skyline.


Then there’s the Garden District, which has numerous immaculately preserved 19th-century mansions. One of the


most famous structures is Colonel Short’s Villa, a home built in 1859 that was seized by invading Union troops and returned to its original owner, Col. Robert H. Short, after the Civil War. Outside the home is a distinctive cast iron morning glory and cornstalk fence. According to a historical marker outside the home, the fence was “furnished by the Philadelphia Foundry of Wood and Miltenberger.”


And not only is the fence cool, but it’s also unique. It’s believed there are only two others like it in existence. ■
