Best-In-Class Magnesium Front Sub-Frame Component Meridian Lightweight Technologies Inc./Ford Motor Co. Strathroy, Ontario, Canada

Material: AE44 magnesium. Process: Cold chamber high pressure diecasting. Weight: 23.1 lbs. Dimensions: 40.4 x 10 x 19.6 in. Application: Automotive mounting structure for steering gear, sway, bar and engine roll restrictor.

• Originally designed as a weldment of steel stampings, the magnesium diecast structure reduced mass by nearly 8.8 lbs. and consolidated 15 parts into one large casting with corrosion mitigation and load distribution parts.

• T e subframe was a CAE-driven design with stringent stiff ness targets. T e fi nal design met all stiff ness, durability, dimensional, and strength perfor- mance requirements, as well as requirements for elevated temperature proof load at attachment points.

• T e subframe is designed to release from the four body mount locations in the case of a collision to reduce engine intrusion into the passenger cabin.
