Roshan Invention Granted Patent

Earlier this year, Metal Casting Design & Purchasing published a pa- per by Dr. Hathibelagal Roshan, the chief metallurgist at Maynard Steel Casting Company (Milwaukee), that detailed his efforts to develop “the innovation of steel plates and billets via a casting process that could break the monopoly of wrought metal and provide an opportunity for the cast- ing industry to enter a market that was not previously accessible.” His invention recently took another

step toward that goal. In April, Roshan was granted U.S. patent 9623480 for the process. T e abstract reads as follows: “A method of producing a steel

Dr. Hathibelagal Roshan was granted a U.S. patent for cast steel foam.

foam component includes provid- ing a mold defining a cavity. The method also includes positioning an insert within the cavity of the mold. The insert can be configured to form a generally uniform pat- tern of pores within the steel foam component, and in some cases oc- cupies at least 20% of the cavity. The method can further include pouring molten steel into the cavity, cooling the molten steel into the steel foam component, and removing the steel foam component and the insert from the mold. Steel components having internal shapes corresponding to the insert(s) are also provided.” ■
