METALCASTER TURNS WEAPONS INTO WARES

For more than two decades, AB&I Foundry, Oakland, Calif., has

partnered with eight local law enforcement agencies in the “Melting Crime Initiative,” a program designed to permanently remove guns and weapons to reduce gun-related violence. The weapons—including rifles, handguns, shotguns, automatic rifles and knives—have been confiscated by local law enforcement agencies or acquired via gun buy-back

programs. They are brought to AB&I and melted at no cost. The metal is recycled into new products, such as cast iron pipes, fittings, exercise weights and frying pans. To date, more than 50,000 guns have been permanently removed from the community.
