AFS Institute Courses

Te AFS Institute will conduct courses in short- ened formats as part of the Education & Expo Pass.

Identifying the Correct Casting Defect Gain a basic overview of the casting defect anal-

ysis procedure and be introduced to the 10-step method for casting defect identification. Partici- pants will learn how to write a good problem state- ment, navigate the International Atlas of Casting Defects and follow a path to identifying the right defect and its root cause for corrective action.

Introduction to Casting Alloys Gain a foundation of knowledge regarding the

major alloy families. Participants will learn about the characteristics and properties (mechanical and physical), as well as general applications, for each alloy type.

Casting Material Properties Participants in this course will leave with the

ability to explain the difference between standard specified casting material properties and those found in castings, the influence of casting irregu- larities on the cast alloy properties, and the impact of the distribution of mechanical properties on the function of the casting in-service. This course complements the Introduction to Casting Alloys course.

Virtual Casting Process See the big picture of the production path

through a metalcasting facility, beginning with the request for quote and leading through tooling cre- ation, mold production, pouring, shakeout/degat- ing, cleaning and inspection, to shipping. Partici- pants will see how each department contributes to the final casting quality and be able to identify how their roles fit in and impact the process.

Introduction to Coreless Induction Furnace Operation

Learn best practices for safe operating tech-

niques for induction melting. The course will cover furnace components, the sequence of operations for daily start up, normal furnace operation, differ- ences between small and large induction furnaces, emergency situations and action plans.
