Maria E. (Zakrewski) Bowles (BBA95), Alumni Achievement Award
Maria E. (Zakrewski) Bowles, director of global fi nance talent management for General Motors, has worked in many diff erent areas of the fi nance department since joining the company in 1999. In her current role, Maria works closely with GM’s chief fi nancial offi cer in recruiting, developing and retaining world-class talent while collaborating with Human Resources. As the executive school coach for non-core schools at GM, she worked to have EMU added to the list for active recruiting in 2014. She is also an active member of the EMU Accounting & Finance Alumni Chapter.
Ryan M. Hershberger (BS97), Alumni Achievement Award
Ryan M. Hershberger is treasurer of FCE Bank, PLC, Ford Credit’s European subsidiary based in Brentwood, England. He has played a key role in returning the Ford Motor Company to investment grade following the 2008 fi nancial crisis. Ryan moved to China in 2012, where he led the development of the capital market in Asia; because of his eff orts, Ford won the 2013 Tao Zhu Gong Award, an industry award recognizing treasury excellence in mainland China. A former member of the EMU Forensics team, Ryan continues to support the team as a donor and a volunteer coach.
Debra Williams (BS84), Alumni Achievement Award
Debra Williams serves as vice president of Woods Construction, Inc., a Sterling Heights fi rm that specializes in retail construction and fi xture installation. She is known for a fair but fi rm management style and is highly respected by employees, subcontractors and clients alike. A member of the National Association of Women in Construction, Debra also works with the preservation group Grand Canyon Association. She is vice president of EMU’s Construction Management Alumni chapter and a member of the College of Technology’s Construction Management Advisory Board.
Brenda Alten (BS88), Distinguished Alumni Award
Brenda Alten is director of corporate internal communications for The J.M. Smucker Company, a position she has held since 2012. She has conducted many television interviews and appeared on TV’s Food Network as emcee of the National Pie Championships awards ceremony. In more than 25 years with J.M. Smucker, she has been an active participant in the company mentor program. Brenda has served as a member of the EMU Foundation Board of Trustees for several years, is chair of the Trusteeship Committee, and gives coaching and fi nancial support to EMU’s Forensic team.
Dr. Sally R. McCracken, Dr. John W. Porter Distinguished Service Award
Sally R. McCracken joined the EMU faculty in 1968 and remained until her retirement in 2012 as a professor in the Department of Communication, Media and Theatre Arts. She was the faculty advisor to Arrival, EMU’s fi rst student handicapper advocacy organization. Sally has been recognized with the Ronald W. Collins Distinguished Faculty Award for Service, the Michigan Association of Governing Boards Teaching Award, and the EMU Alumni Association’s Teaching Excellence Award. Currently, Sally serves as an executive board member and vice president of EMU’s Emeritus Faculty Association.
