Undergraduate’s research aims to inspire support by Jeff Mortimer
he term “raising awareness” is used so routinely these days that hearing it can easily provoke a yawn or a roll of the eyes.
But senior Brialle Ringer’s work restores authenticity to the
shopworn concept by making visible the formerly all-but-invisible problem of college student homelessness. She has already presented her paper on the subject at both EMU’s Undergraduate Symposium and the McNair Scholars Heartland Research Conference in Kansas City. “College Students Experiencing Homelessness” is truly groundbreaking, and that’s truly remarkable for an undergraduate.

Ringer knows whereof she writes. Her parents separated
when she was four years old, and she “kind of grew up in unstable housing, bouncing around between family members,” she says. “I never lived in a house for a full year.” For her, the personal became scholarly. Financial support from relatives and scholarships has helped
