Class Notes 1950s
Donald A. Kleinsmith (BA56, MA58) retired after 45 years at Adrian College. Kleinsmith began as Adrian’s dean of men, and later served as director of housing, conferences, and college services before joining the faculty of both English and business. In 1996 he received the college’s Exemplary Teaching Award, and later was inducted into the Adrian College Faculty Hall of Fame.
1960s
Brian Einhorn (BS63) has been recognized by Best Lawyers as the 2016 Lawyer of the Year in the Professional Malpractice Law – Defendants category in Metro Detroit.
Jerry Boykin (BS66), a civil litigation attorney and counsel to the law firm of Bean, Kinney & Korman, PC, was inducted into the Virginia Trial Attorneys Hall of Fame.
Al Gaiss (BS65, MA66, SPA67) was recently elected for his fifth two- year term on the Bessemer (N.C.) City Council.
Thomas C. O’Brien (BBA66) was honored by Best Lawyers as a 2015 Lawyer of the Year in two categories for his work on criminal
and civil cases.
Rodger Gach (BA67, MS70) is president of Rod’s Computers, LLC, Royal Oak.
1970s
Former Congressman Dennis Hertel (BS71) was appointed professor by the National Defense University for the Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies.
Timothy Lewis (BS71, MA72) was elected mayor of Charlotte, Mich.
Kim Kokko Davids (BS74), Fairfield Glade, Tenn., received the Greek Woman of the Year Award from the Nashville Panhellenic Association. She serves Tri Sigma as a national officer in volunteer recruitment.
Mary Gailbreath (BBA84), above, has been promoted to vice president- administration and secretary/ treasurer of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, Flint, a private

philanthropy that supports non-profit programs throughout the U.S. and internationally.
Clyde Edwards (BS85) is currently chief of staff for State Representative Sheldon Neeley (D-Flint).
James Deren (BS77), a former EMU track and field All-American, recently published “Run to Faith,” which recounts his journey toward athletic and spiritual contentment.
1980s
Linda R. Etter (CNCS81) has retired from teaching and published two books, “Listen to HIS Heartbeat” and “Listen to HIS Heartbeat 2.”
Daniel J. McClory (BS81, MA82, HPS10) is an international investment banker who was recently appointed Managing Partner for Fondinvest Capital.
Richard Pietroski (MS83), CEO of Gift of Life Michigan, was elected treasurer to the board of directors for the national Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network/United Network for Organ Sharing (OPTN/UNOS).
Catherine Dyer (BA84, ELPU84, MA00) recently participated in Miami University’s Earth Expeditions global field course in Costa Rica.
Dr. Gary W. Procop (BS87), above, was elected President of the Trustees of the American Board of Pathology. He was also honored by the College of American Pathologists with the Distinguished Patient Care Award for his work during the Ebola crisis.
Alan Jesiel (BS88) enrolled in the Navy ROTC Unit at the University of Michigan and served in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm as part of six years of active duty. He now works with TIAA-CREF in Ann Arbor as lead Wealth Management Advisor for EMU.
Deborah (Lewis) Wolter (BS85, ELPU85, MA88) recently published her first book, “Reading Upside Down: Identifying and Addressing Opportunity Gaps in Literacy Instruction.” The book focuses on how opportunity gaps can impact students throughout their entire educational career.
Dr. Kam M. Lim (BS86, MS88) of Nanyang Technological University was awarded the Public Administration Medal by the President of the Republic of Singapore on the occasion of Singapore’s 50th National Day.
1990s
Deanna Hatmaker (BS90), senior vice president of development and strategic performance for Ulliance, Inc., an international service company headquartered in Troy, has been appointed to the Baker College Business Administration Statewide Advisory Board.
Will Dane (MPA94), former fire chief of Scio Township, lives in Slidell, La., where he is employed by Fluor Corporation, a global Fortune 500 firm that designs and builds complex projects.
Susan Wineberg (MS94) published “Historic Ann Arbor: An Architectural Guide,” with Patrick McCauley.
Dr. Jeffrey Waple (MA95) was named vice chancellor for student affairs at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. He was previously assistant vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Northern Kentucky University.
George Lichman (BS96) was promoted to lieutenant at the City of Rocky River, Ohio, Police Department and named public information officer.
Richard Onderko (BS97) is serving with the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
Rasheedah Wazeerud-Din (BS97, MA04, BS09) published “And the Words Just Came To Me,” about losing, yearning and having faith.
Frank Czapski (BS98) was elected union president of the Southfield Association of School Administrators in June and Utica City Councilman in July 2015.
Laura Huot (MS98) was named the new chief operating officer for The Guidance Center in Southgate.
2000s
Julie Massengill (BS00), a correctional sergeant at the Monroe County Jail, received the United Way 2015 Law Enforcement Hero Award and a special tribute from Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder for assisting in saving an inmate’s life.
