Together Again Former classmates join

Preservation Program are together again, working for O|X Studio, an architectural firm that is itself located in an historic building in downtown Ann Arbor. Kristi Gilbert became director of marketing in November, and Jenna Walker joined the firm as senior interior designer in March. Gilbert and Walker graduated


together in March 2009, each earning a Master of Historic Preservation Planning. Gilbert spent the last 16 years working in a variety of marketing and business development capacities at SmithGroupJJR’s Ann Arbor office. “It is a great coup for us to have Kristi on board,” said Andrew Hauptman, O|X Studio principal.

Inspirational prof taught joy of learning Former theatre professor Paul George Bird, 88, of Ypsilanti,


died May 6. Bird’s EMU career spanned 52 years and included directing an estimated 65 shows and designing sets for about 200. Along the way, he challenged and inspired thousands of students, who fondly remember him for his wit, passion and vision. Te design of Quirk Teatre, which Bird once called his “Field of Dreams,” was heavily influenced by his drawings and ideas. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Laura Catharine Bird; his former wife, Jane Schmiedeke; their two children, Paul Ramsay Bird and Anne Elizabeth, and her husband Mark Michaels and their children, Abigail and Katherine Michaels. “Te most important thing you can do for a student is teach


them that there is such a thing as the joy of learning,” Bird said in 2006. “If you can do that, you’re a good teacher, perhaps a great teacher.” Bird was a great one, indeed.
