Mr. President

Alumnus named student body president of Harvard Law School

Nino Monea (BS14) has been elected

student body president of Harvard Law School. He and his running mate received 63% of the 1,176 votes cast in the election, a record turnout for the 1,800-student school. Monea, who will begin his third year at Harvard in the fall, was involved in student government throughout his Eastern career, serving as student body vice president his senior year, and also participated in Model United Nations and with the Moot Court and Mock Trial teams. “What I think we did differently is we

really tried hard to make sure our platform was realistic and based on things we actually were confident could be done,” says Monea. His administration hit the ground running, and is already “trying to create a student housing option for low-income folks for their visit aſter they’ve been admitted.”

EASTERN MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2016 | 37 He says his Eastern experience “absolutely

shaped me as a person, not just my ability to think, but to be with people comfortably, speak publicly, and manage an organization. Tat was absolutely crucial to my getting into Harvard. My leadership in groups really allowed me to make my application stand out.” Monea’s path, which has already led

from 10 years of home schooling to a public university to an elite private law school, is likely to remain unconventional. “Te school likes to talk about how people are going to be leaders in the country and we’re not preparing them to do the kind of public service work we hope our leaders are prepared for,” he says. “Consumer protection and civil rights are both important causes that really need people. Tere are a lot of consumer protection and civil rights cases

that aren’t going forward because there aren’t enough people going into that field. I feel it’s important and rewarding, and I could see myself being really happy in a career in those fields for many years.” He’ll be spending a year aſter graduation

clerking on the Michigan Supreme Court, “which will give me some time to figure it out,” Monea says.
