People-to-People Children wave letters they received from students in partner classrooms halfway around
the world. The students participated in People-to-People school and classroom programs that facilitated exchanges of newspaper clippings, tape recordings and school projects. More than 25,000 American classrooms participated. The Auxiliary embraced this model of “personal diplomacy.” “Auxiliary members are the type of persons who are needed in this program,” said L.P.
Cookingham, executive director of Kansas City-based People-to-People, in 1966. “We have À YH PLOOLRQ PHQ ZHDULQJ WKH PLOLWDU\ XQLIRUP WRGD\ $Q HTXDO QXPEHU RI SHUVRQV GUHVVHG LQ civilian uniforms and also working for peace would not be too much to hope for.”
