Some creative ways to engage veterans over the holidays:

• February 5—T row a “Super Bowl Sunday” game party! What a great treat for nursing home residents and pick-me-up for hospitalized veterans! You can get handheld banners for each team and let the veterans

choose the team they want to root for. You can serve snacks like pigs in a blanket, popcorn and soft drinks.

• February 14—Ask children to make veterans Valentine’s cards and hand deliver them. T e card can be heart shaped and, for example, kids can write, “Who makes my heart happy?” and on the inside glue in a piece of silver refl ective foil paper and write “You, for the freedoms I enjoy. T ank you for your service.”

• T e week of April 9—It’s Volunteer Recognition Week, and it doesn’t have to cost a thing. Volunteer hour achievement pins can be ordered from National Headquarters at vfwauxiliary.org and presented at a regular meeting. Certifi cates can be made for those who have not achieved the hour requirement for a pin. You can post a photo of the volunteer on the Auxiliary, Post, District, and Department websites or Facebook pages.

If you are going to attend

the spring VFW Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., make appointments in advance to visit your state legislators. Review the 2017 VFW

Priority Goals (to be released in late January/early February) so you can be well versed and eff ectively present the issues that

the Auxiliary and VFW most want to emphasize. Visit vfw.org and click on Advocacy, National Legislative Service to fi nd all the information you’ll need.

Have your Membership Chairman work hand-in-hand with your Department’s National Certifi ed Recruiter Trainer. Two heads and sets of hands are better than one, and these trained Recruiters can make the diff erence in your Department attaining your goal in Membership.

T e Auxiliary off ers

four $1,000 Continuing Education Scholarships every year, awarding one to a member, their spouse, son or daughter from each of our four Conferences. Going to college is

worth it. A degree will be one of the most lucrative

investments an individual can make. But it’s also important to understand the bigger picture; why scholarships have become so essential and how they can be vital to post-college success. Here are the top fi ve reasons to look into scholarships. 1. College costs a lot more than it used to. 2.

T e economy could be better and our parents’ funds may be limited. 3. T e cost of college living is up. Unless you plan on living at home and commuting to school—a very good option—plan
